Shot myself in the foot!! Monojet :(
Ok. So I got tired of messing with the old carb and found one on eBay. The 250 in my truck is a '77 model. I bought a Monojet to go on an early '70s model so I had to change some stuff. One of those things was the throttle return spring bracket. Well....somehow I lost the valve for the idle compensator in the process. I just discovered it when I brought the carbs into work to modify that bracket to make it fit. Any one have a junk Monojet I can steal the valve from? Its 29 in the diagram. I'll do what I need to to obtain one. Thanks!!

If you plug the hole you really don't need it. It was only used on some models, basically cars. You probably have a pass. car carb.

I know it was listed as a B.O.P. carb so it was definately for a car. I'm gonna make a weak attempt at finding it. It still may be where the truck is parked...maybe not. So I can just plug it with some epoxy if I need to?

Thanks! I looked around where the truck was but couldn't find it. I'm still on the fence as to what I should do. If work isn't busy tomorrow I may just take Wrenchbenders advice and block it off. Not my first choice but it is a choice nonetheless.

If possible I would see if you could find a screw or something you could thread in it's place that way if it turns out you actually need it then you don't have to drill and tap the epoxy out (that is, if in my tired stupor I am reading everything right and this is a threaded hole to begin with, if not ignore me )

Nick,
Neither one of the carbs I have have the compensator on them. Would it work to make a gasket for the cover and just screw it back on, or find a tight fitting plug and put in the hole for now? I don't know if there is any pressure on that area or not. LockDoc

I think I have one for a Q-Jet. I will look tomorrow & take measurements. The cover is vented. Putting a gasket under it would not be a good way to seal it.
I guaranty if you plug that hole you will never know the difference. |

Well as luck would have it, my luck anyway, found it! I made a gasket like LockDoc suggested, ran home, bolted it down and we were back in business. I drove around for a few minutes enjoying the truck again and just before I put the truck back in its spot I thought to look. I walked over to the section of asphalt where the truck is usually parked and BLAM! there it was on the ground! Oh well, Ive got it now so if I run into problems again I'll chuck it in there.

I have a couple of old mono's in the garage and I was going to look to see if they had one but then read where you found yours.
Two things I know for a fact will happen when working on vehicles; -Anything you drop while working on an engine will bounce under the vehicle just out of reach. -Misplace something? (Happening more to me these days) Take a break then go back and look and you will find it. Almost like someone hid it and put it back.

Its not like its a broken crank, blown head or spun bearing. Its two screws.

Man Nick, this is starting to read like a book..... Maybe putting it back to factory specs will cure it's ills. I certainly hope so. I didn't think to mention using a little silicone gasket sealer on the homemade gasket. LockDoc

Haha! Yup its getting a bit dramatic for such a small issue. I thought about using some sealer but didn't. Its whatever. I'll put the compensator back in the and see what happens. Its drizzling rain here today, has been all week. I may get a chance to chuck it in there later.
