Re: 700r4 conversion

The D/S has to be shortened, the tranny cross member has to be moved, need a tv cable and mounting hardware for carb, shift linkage, electric hookup for the lock up. Just did the conversion in my 72.

Re: 700r4 conversion

Very important to set the tv cable correctly on that tranny. If not set correctly you can burn it up pretty quick. Don't let that discourage you though, I ran a 700r4 behind a juicy small block with a 513 gear set in an 81 Malibu for a few years and it was a great set up. Loved the OD and lock up converter, pulled better then 16mpg on the highway running two 650cfm holleys and had great low end with the lower first gear ratio. It is one of the first upgrades I am going to do to my truck now.

Re: 700r4 conversion

Any Chevy V8 700r4 will bolt up to your block, try to stick to the newer ones, 1988-1992. These transmissions benefited from GM refining the design. It's a good trans, make sure to run a good cooler with the factory cooler, heat is hard on them.

Re: 700r4 conversion

It is a good upgrade almost mandatory with the price of the liquid gold today. It is well worthwhile in a daily to make a overdrive change. Jim

The yoke of the driveshaft is larger in diameter on a TH400 than a 700R4/4L60

Good point. I believe the 700r4 has the same yolk as a th350/350c, metric 200 or the 200r4. Should be a pretty easy salvage yard find.

Re: 700r4 conversion

How tough would a 700r4 swap be on a 70 C20? I am wanting to DD mine and although the 10-12 I am currently getting isn't too bad (I know, shocked the hell outta me too) I would really like to have the OD option........ I am sure there is probably a thread that has it but just getting off a long day at work I can't find one at all...... Anyone possibly have one bookmarked they could toss the link to me?

If you move the engine/trans forward do you still need to move the cross member or is that just a matter of drilling new holes for it?
