transmission tunnel??

OK again as I go through my 65 I have found the transmission tunnel was done really bad. It was covered with fiberglass, and I would be ok with that but it looks bad. I am trying to find a transmission tunnel that i can weld in. So my question is there a panel I can but that can be welded in? Also I am assuming it was not an auto. They also cut the tunnel and bent it down then covered it with fiberglass. If there is not panel i can buy suggestions would be great.

Options available will largely depend on which portion of the tunnel is damaged. If it’s between the seat and the firewall, you’ll need to determine if you have a high hump or low hump floor. Here are comparison photos to show the difference:

A high hump pan is almost square in the center, rises up in front of the seat, and is always removable:



The low hump drops in front of the seat, may be removable or may be a permanent part of the floor.





If you have a one piece low hump floor (without a removable pan) the easiest solution would be to source a removable pan, cut the floor out undersize a couple of inches and bolt the new pan in place. It could also be welded in place, but the convenience of the removable pan can be a real plus when doing transmission work.

These pans are not available in the aftermarket, so junkyards, Ebay, swap meets or the parts for sale section are your best bets.
