Do you have ANY experience with a welder, cutting pipe, or having the equipment to make your own bends?
If not... maybe having an exhaust shop look at it to give you a quote. Gary

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
I did some searching, saw a few members take a hole saw to the factory crossmember to route exhaust through. Is this something that is risky as far as structural integrity?
Or is the factory member still strong enough with 3" holes cut to run dual 2.5" exhaust? I don't have anything special, a gm crate motor with I think 275hp or so Just curious. Didn't know if dropping money on an aftermarket crossmember was a must or more optional. Last edited by draggin49; 10-14-2013 at 07:21 PM. |

Oh gary, I will be getting quotes and having an exhaust shop tackle it.
My main dillemma is if I can cut the stock member to run exhaust or do i need to dump $$$ and get an aftermarket one that has holes already built into it. Never done it before so I don't know if its ok or a bad idea |

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
Did some more searching, and think I found a pic of what I want to do
.I have a nice bassani x pipe I want to run. Dont want to run just 2 chamber flowmasters cuz its too common.hahaha , no mufflers with the x and straight pipes all the way out the rear would be fun but not sure if the cops would sweat me.my chopped 49 ford sedan, has dual straight pipes , no mufflers, not too bad, only really loud when you stand on it Most likely 2 chambers though and the X pipe |

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
Its ok to cut the holes in a stock crossmember but most i have seen sleeve it with some pipe. Someone on the parts board a while back was selling the hole saw arbor and extra pipe from their project. It would be a lot less hassle than. Changing the crossmember on a truck with the cab on. If you are going to lower the truck a lot thats a different matter. Most aftermarket crossmembers have relocated contr arm mounts to correct for the lowering.
I lowered my 72 2.5"/4" and used a one piece driveshaft with the carrier bearing mount removed. I was planning on Doing rhe holes through the crossmember but the painter called with an ipening to do the truck before i got to it so i just ran a heart throb kit from lmc. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=153 Its designed for stock manifolds but im sure could be modified for shorty headers. Hard to beat $239 for mandrel bent aluminized exhaust! All muffler shops local to me wanted more than that for crush bent pipe. The included mufflers are pretty quiet, but that what i I wanted. Only issue was all pipes labelled "RH" actually fir the driver side and vice versa. |

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
that first picture is my truck and i used 3/4 length of 4" pipe welded on both sides.
i think a lot of HP and a lot of weight would put stress on stuff like the cross member. Im at 300hp long way from hurting anything. by the way I have band clamp the the muff shop put in there so I can get the pipe out if need be.

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
I guess I could measure and see what length one piece driveshaft would work with my new 700r4 trans
Otherwise ill be paying to shorten the 2 piece factory one |

Hi draggin49,
To give you an idea this is what my bodyshop made. Stainless steel exhaust with bypass valves and the oem crossmember with holes in it. No X or Y pipe.

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
Not to hijack I was thinking of doing this myself but I had concerns about running the exhaust so close to the transmission. Won't the heat kill the trans? Has anyone made a heat shield of some sort?

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
No worries on the transmission. Many stock systems run close to transmissions and transfer cases.

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
A thin sheet metal heat shield will do the trick. By the time the exhaust gets that far down the pipe it has lost a bunch of heat. Still too hot to touch but only 2-400 degrees. The biggest problem is under long duration idle or WOT.

Re: need help with exhaust routing, pics etc...
Bypass valves are sexy stuff. Must have them now. A truck passed me in the tunnel the other day with them dumped. Wow was it loud and sexy

My IROC is straight piped. Not too ridiculous except cruising up hills. it gets pretty drone-y.
