fiberglassforums.com dead?
so sad
fiberglassforums.com has gone away. i found the fiberglassforums site when i started my interior build. i learned a lot from the experienced guys on the forum. i went there to learn the how to on building a sub box behind the seat on my 58 truk. it snowballed from a sub box to a complete fiberglass interior for my 58. the old moderator sold the site to someone he thought would carry the site on. sadly the new moderator did less and less with the site and finally closed it last month. i knew nothing about glass when i joined fgf.com 8 yrs ago. my fiberglass interior kicks sub enclosure and arm rest console, dash facia and column cover door panels seat pedestals tonneou cover radiator cover it is amazing what you can do with sticks, cardboard and a little resin the interior link in my signature goes to my build over there. i'll leave it for a bit in case someone saves the site

Re: fiberglassforums.com dead?
The site owner should let someone copy the articles and mirror them somewhere. So much lost knowledge.

Re: fiberglassforums.com dead?
Thats awesome work !!! You should listen to what people are saying as you have a talent and an eye for it. Where can an old guy go and learn this trade. I would love to build my own dash and console etc. Seriously--I have lots of time as I am forced retirement now !!!

Re: fiberglassforums.com dead?
Ogre, thanks for help. Few more questions. I stapled the fleece to the back, after I put resin on the fleece should I take the staples out. Or just scuff it with the grinder and apply fiberglass over it? Here are some pics.

Re: fiberglassforums.com dead?
after the initial fleece and resin you can sand or grind any high spots on the back.
especially rumpled areas of fleece, soak the edges of the wood with resin so that it soaks into the edge of the wood and glues the fleece down. any high staples can be pulled or sanded down. i bought a used upholstery stapler that really sinks the staple head.

Re: fiberglassforums.com dead?
just went back and looked at your thread, fiberglass doesn't like to wrap well especially right angles.
the mat wants to lift up on edges and make air bubbles, keep working the edges until they lay flat. i suggest you pull your fleece off and round over the corners of your speaker ring and the edges of your mounting board. not sure how your speaker mounts to the ring or into the second ring, i round over all the edges of the mdf to help the glass wrap. look at the edge detail on my rings and how i trim the fleece before i glass the kick. the step in the ring where the fleece is trimmed to is how far i glass. i didn't glass into the speaker recess, otherwise the speaker won't fit. my rings are a bottom layer of 3/4'' mdf with a 1/2'' layer of mdf on top with all the details cut into the 1/2'' piece. not saying your kicks won't glass, you'll just need to work them a bit more. you can glass them as is, sand out the high spots and then glass some more. read up about stippling the resin in the fiberglass mat to get the air bubbles out. don't brush the resin on that will just ball up the mat, dab it on, dab, dab, dab; that gets the bubbles out and makes the mat lay flat. don't mix a whole lot of resin, i usually mix 4 to 12 oz at a time. when it kicks off you end up with a glass of hot hard resin. look at the beginning of my interior build where i tear the mat into little pieces. those 4''x4'' pieces are for a relatively flat subwoofer box. for kicks use 2''x2'' pieces of 3/4 oz mat, what i usually do is cut 2'' wide strips with a razor knife, tear those strips into roughly 2 or 3'' long pieces for use with the resin. it makes a whole lot more sense when you start doing it.
