700 r4 speedo question

I have a 89 700r4 out of a 89 S-1o want to put it in my 72, the problem is the speerometer - the s-19 had an electric speedo, does any one know what I have to do to have a speedo? The truck won't be doing any hauling - just a crisier ( my 81 c=30 is the hauleer)

There is a GM tailhousing that is for the 700R4 that is for a mechanical speedometer. Talk to the parts guy at the local dealer. He should know the number. I believe it was for the 87 pickups.

You don't need to buy -any- special parts - you can swap from electric to mechanical by just buying the necessary parts for the mechanical speedo. You'll need the drive gear, the clip that holds it in, the driven gear, the sleeve (depends on your driven gear which one you use, there's two), and the seals for the sleeve.

That, and a speedo cable long enough to reach. No need to buy a different tailhousing.

Edit: $500+ for that black box?!? The parts I mentioned shouldn't run over $100, and that's at full dealer retail! The sleeve is the priciest bit, and that's $60 new/retail...you can get it cheaper at some dealers, or yank it from a junkyard.

hope you are not putting s10 tranny behind a v8. 6 cyl trannys have fewer clutches than v8. can be converted but has to be torn down and v8 parts installed.
