Magnetic Oil Plug Question - Magnetic Mud?
Never had one. Got one now. My first one ever.
Changed the oil in John Lee.....had to beat the oil filter off with a hammer driving a screwdriver driving the filter counterclockwise since my filter strap wrench broke! But got it done. Noted the magnetic oil plug is pickin up fines....real fine fines...looks like unmixed oil based paint.....no slivers or chunks. And not much at all, just less than a drop on the magnet. Sorta like magnetic mud? I'm usin ZDDP but never had a magnetic plug before so I don't have a clue how much goo on a plug is normal. This was the second oil change. Motor has just under 8K miles now....had 200 on it when I picked it up (19 year sit) So, first oil change was 2500 miles no magnetic plug. This one was the second oil change, bout 5000 miles or so. Normal? Opinions? Last edited by Sharps40; 10-20-2013 at 06:57 PM. |

Re: Magnetic Oil Plug Question - Magnetic Mud?
That sounds normal. remember, that first bit you're cleaning all the crap out of a new motor, and also that stuff usually doesn't make it out of the pan, it's that last little bit right by the plug that doesn't come out, so it's still in there. I still get a little bit on changes with my one motor that has about 3k on it. I tend to overchange the oil on it. If you cut the filter open and see fine glitter though, that's usually the telltale sign.

[QUOTE=cortcomp;6324912] (CUT...) "If you cut the filter open and see fine glitter though, that's usually the telltale sign."
Now that sounds logical, informative, and interesting as well. Plus, only takes a few minutes to get such an xray of the oiling system and wear symptoms. Good idea for a note to keep on the workbench! I like it. Sam |

Okay. No real worries then .... unless I start getting bolts and nuts attached to the magnet!

Re: Magnetic Oil Plug Question - Magnetic Mud?
I second the Oil filter trick. I used that on my Caprice and had a lot of very fine pieces of metal that turned out to be from the lobes of the camshaft and lifters wearing away as I was not aware of the no Zinc in Mobil 1 Synthetic. I will say cutting the filter with a hacksaw was a mess. Glad to hear you are using ZDDP don't stop using it!
