NP208 vs. Np241

Has anyone ever put a 241 transfer case in place of a 208 in their square. From what I hear it is just an updated version of the 208 with better oiling system and shifting. Not sure if you can just take a 241 that was auto trans and put it on any auto trans or not. Do driveshafts have to be modified?

The 241 has an upgraded planetary as well. I think 6-pinion, if I remember correct. With that and the oiling upgrades it is rated for a higher GVWR. The square body 241 has a couple variations, early ones have the cable driven speedo, '91MY have VSS for electric speedo. There are two different input shafts as well, 27 spline and 32 spline. I know the 32 spline is on models behind a 4L80-E and 27 spline after 4L60s (or the updated 700R4 if you prefer). As far as spline count, I do not know what is behind SM-465s, TH350, or TH400, if those trans were available when the NP241 was.

Just wondering because I have a 241 out of my 91 Z71 that came with a 700r4. I will have to check into the spline count between the two. I will have to see if it can go on a 350TH trans.

I stated square body 241 for a reason, as joe mentioned, the 241 was used heavily in the IFS trucks and it is a driver's side drop case.

And the np241 has slightly lower gearing then the np208 and the np241 is easier to do a SYE on then the np208 is.

A 241 is a bit heavier duty then a np231 (jeep wrangler case.) it has been used a lot in 1/2 ton trucks. it can take a beating but wont hold as much as the older gear drives or a dana 300. some cases can be flopped and run upside down solving some of your drop issues. but more research and info would be needed to make that decision. jeepers for years have used and trusted advanced adaptors ( mating things is easier when they help out....)

GM trans are odd i don't think it will bolt right on a 350th,Do you still have the 700r4?If its still in good shape i would swap them both.

Yes I should have known about the drop being on the wrong side. It must have been a dodge 241 I read about the swap.

Is your np208 in good shape?If its just a normal truck the np208 should be fine in it.If your looking at having a off road toy i would think hard about a np205 swap then.

A guy I know is building a truck to do flat drags. He said they use the 208 since it has lower gears. I knew I had a 241 and had read where some guys were putting 241's in their K5's and trucks for the lower gear and also the internal oil pump. The 208 has something like a 2.6 gear and the 241 is around a 2.7.

I believe they used the 241 earlier than 91 with the electronic speedo. I have a 90 unit out in the garage. Was going to use it in a project but it left. I will try to dig it out and get some specs on it.

you can swap in a ford or dodge lh drop axle and use a lh drop transfer case
