9j9 deluxe sport equip?

I looked at a 77 chevy 4x4 that has 9j9 deluxe sport equipment on the spid as an option. Just wondering about the code. I think this could be a roll bar. Has anyone ever seen a factory roll bar on one of these trucks? Any pics?

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

That truck might be a chevy sport, which is rare. Search this forum for "chevy sport" and read up on it.

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

It is not a chevy sport. If it was it would have the code Z77 on the spid. I think a code like 9j9 is a copo order code.

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

The 9J9 is the COPO option for the "sport rail" as Chevy called the roll bar

As far as I have seen this was only available with the 9J8 copo for the Chevy Sport

If you can post or email me a picture of the truck and the SPID I would like to add it to my reference file

The Chevy Sport option in 76 and 77 was a copo

The Z77 RPO code for Chevy Sport/GMC Street Coupe was not used until 1978 ....and last year was 1981

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

80Sport I sent you a pm with the full size images of the spid and truck. Also some pics of a 79 sport that I own.

I forgot that in 76 and 77 the sport was a copo option. This truck only has 9J9 on the spid though. Here is a pic of the spid.

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

I think it is a 77 Chevy Sport;the 9J9 COPO may have included the 9J8

If you did not want the sport rail/roll bar you just ordered 9J8

But these trucks are rare;so we would need to find a few more SPIDs to verify

I have no dealer order sheets on the 77

A couple of pictures .....

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

I think you are right Alex. It has all of the options that the black 2x4 fleetside you posted above has down to the chrome rear step bumper. I was concerned that white was not a color you could have on a sport until I saw that white truck in the ad above. It has the same color stripes that the black trucks have. If I can work out a deal on the truck I can order the invoice for it from GM archives. Maybe it would have a little more info on it.

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

Well the 77 chevy sport arrived today. Here are a few pics of it:

Here is the switch for the lights on the roll bar.

Here are some pics of the stripes that were on the truck, they are still visible on the back side of the doors and on the bed:

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

FWIW: Looked at my "build sheet" and it shows the following:

9J8--Prom PKG
6Q9--COPO Carpet
9A1--COPO (GVW Rating Plate)

Will look when I get a chance on my SPID as I believe the description
on some of the above is somewhat different.--Larry

Just a followup: Looked at my SPID and it indicated that 9J8 was a
Sport Prom Package. No mention of "Deluxe" as the one above so I would
think that if the SPID has a 9J9 it would mean that it needed a 9J8 to
order that option. Also the 6Q9 was the same as the above SPID which
is "Floor Carpeting" as opposed to the build sheet of "COPO Carpet".Larry

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

Thanks for the info Larry. I don't have the build sheet for this truck. The 9j9 included the 9j8 equipment, plus the bar with the lights on it in the bed.

Kinda surprised that Chevy did it this way. AFAIK all other COPO's where
an option on the original model. eg: 70 Z28 model was mandatory to get COPO#
9796 (Tall Spoiler). This is the first I heard of one option w/o indicating the
original option code. Learn something new everyday.--Larry

In the engineering world any time you see a code that is a number/alpha/number we call that an SEO code (Specialty Equipment Option - as opposed to an RPO - Regular Production Option).

I believe those could be ordered free standing and there was a group that was separate from the mainstream engineering group that supported this.

That was more in line with how the Medium Duty trucks were done, which had a much higher incidence of "one-sie/two-sie" option combinations built than did the full scale production light duty trucks.

Re: 9j9 deluxe sport equip?

Great info Larry and Keith. I was just assuming, but not sure, that the 9j9 included the 9j8 from the research on the 77's that I had done. I have just not been able to find as much info on the 77's for some reason. I even tried to order the invoice for this truck from GM media archive but they said they could not find it. I was under the impression that my truck was a very early production unit, but when it arrived the sticker on the door has a date of 7/77 which is a very late production 77 that was made in Flint. The serial starts at 500---.

John here is my 79 that I bought from a guy in Montana that is the exact truck in the ad above:
