it's been said but if you have a 96 block you need to meet the smog requirements of that engine and year. so yes you need 96+ smog equipment

Try to find any info on the block. But I'm not 100% on that.

Google is your friend. for decoding engine numbers try: http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w..._chevy_engines. also for smog info: www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smog.htm
search California Vehicle Emissions Testing and get a copy of the California Vehicle Code. a professional registration service should be able to help steer you in the right direction. search for one in your area or try Donna Leek for a possible reference to someone in your area: pro.reg.service@gmail.com - I do know of a '76 that has a '92 350 in it that has all of the original smog equipment on it that passes the Smog tests.

With as TBI engine the smog shop would take 1 look then open the door and look for the aluminum sticker in the door jam.
The aluminum sticker lets the smog shop know what you must smog the truck to in order to be compliant.
My 1972 chevy had a 1974 454 engine in it instead of the 350 so the title says my 1972 is a 1974.

In your case I would have simply went to one of the pull it yourself wreckers and simply got everything you needed including the bolts, brackets and lines.
What are you talking about? They cant simply change the year of your vehicle because of the engine. That make ZERO sense. Most blocks are cost to cover xx-xx years. Such as 68-72 or something similar. So how would they even know which year specifically to turn the truck into? For example, a 330817 SBC 400 has a casting number that shows it was used from 1973-80. So with that simple FACT, are you telling me they would now title your vehicle as an 80? Even more importantly, that splits right down the middle almost, either needing or NOT needing to be smogged. Think about it
Here is the casting number chart I usually use.

Unless the VIN is stamped on the engine, there is almost no way to tell EXACTLY what year the engine came from. Some may of sat a year or two before actually being fully assembled and installed in a vehicle. What stampings are on your block? If youd like, you can PM me and I'll help you out,

Man twice a year? That's pretty bad. Once a year is hard enough down here.
