bed weight
Does anyone know how heavy a long, fleetside bed is (with and w/o wood). I'm thinking about removing my bed and just wondered what kind of weight I'd be dealing with. How many guys would it take to easily lift it off the truck?

I'm not trying to be a heman but I removed and installed mine by myself. I'd really recommend 3-4 people. Just a guess but It must have weighed around 400 lbs with the wood in it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=248758&page=4

my teenage son and I just lifted my 63 short fleetside w/o wood and it's heavy. maybe 300 lbs.

I used an engine hoist by myself. Two tuff guys could probably do it, four people for sure should be able to get it.

Did mine with a buddy, and an engine hoist. Picked up one end by myself to move it from stands to jack stands (and back). Will be reinstalling by myself with the wood in. I'll guess 300lbs, no wood, 500lbs with wood.

Don't forget how cumbersome it is. I did my longbed without wood and had a total of 4 people lifting. I would say it weighed probably 220-250 pounds without the wood or the cross sills, but it did have the rearmost cross sill attached. One of the guys was a very small, skinny 19 year old and he struggled just a little bit, but not too bad. Wood and metal strips probably add another 150 pounds, depending on what wood you use. My 150 pound estimate is for southern yellow pine fully primed and painted. Allow more for more dense wood. And with all the cross sills, I'd probably add another 100 pounds.
Best advice is to plan the whole move and make sure everything is out of the way and everyone understands what you are going to do. We were putting it back on and I laid the cross sills on the frame so we had to manipulate it a little. If I did it again, I'd attach them all loosely, to avoid having to manipulate it around them. |
