Did you have to modify any sheetmetal to get that motor to fit in there?
Can you use a TH350 trans. or do you have to use something else?

Thanks

Darren

Looks great. I've been there before. It takes a lot of work to get these engines installed. But all your hardwork it VERY worth the performance of it.

I really like that setup. What tranny are you using? Are you doing the work. I just put an LT1 in my truck with a 700R4. Haven't started it yet but can't wait!

Yes it is completely different than the old-style small blocks....i think the only interchangable parts are the cam bearings.

The new 4.8/5.3/6.0 truck motors also have the same basic design, but are iron, wheras the LS1 and LS6 are both allumium

I can't speak for cb, but I can answer some of your questions. You have to run an E-series transmission. That means either a 4L60E or a 4L80E. The computer tells the transmission what to do, and any non electronic controlled transmission won't work.

The LS1 is the new generation GM small block. It has an aluminum block, and aluminum heads. The 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 are the same motor, but use a cast iron block with aluminum heads. They LS1 and LS6 use a low profile plastic intake designed to fit under the hood of Camaros or Corvettes.

The 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 use a high rise style plastic intake for low end torque....

i can speak from experience but you can use a TH350 or th400 tranny if you so choose with the LS1 engine. i have used the combo in a 00 Trans Am that i drag raced. all it takes is an adapter plate. the LS1 and LS6 plastic intakes and cyclinder heads will also bolt directly to the 6.0 and the 6.0 and 5.3 heads will bolt onto the LS1 engine. in my opinion i would use the 6.0L truck engine and use Lunati's 4inch stroke crankand rods and pistons to go out to 408 cubes. have the 6.0l heads ported, throw on a LS6 intake and throttle body and mass ait and related components. i have seen similar combos produce over 450hp and idle smoothly while pulling down decent gas mileage. this is al by far not cheap, but well with in reach.

sinister72 you are correct. You can run any transmission you choose I suppose. But none of these will bolt up, like you said.

I was told by a number of companies that a non electronic transmission would not work. I based my response on the information provided by these companies.

I just read an article in the December issue of Classic Trucks where they are doing an LS1 install using a 700r4. So it can be done.

You can actually bolt up a th350, th400, 2004r or a 700r4. I'm using the 700r4 behind mine. The only difference in the bellhousing pattern of the transmissions and the Ls1 is one of the top bolt holes doesn't exist on the block. It's plenty strong with the other 5 bolts.

You would also need to buy a flexplate adapter from several different companies that make one. I bought mine from Yank Converters. Then you can buy a TV cable for the LS1 from Bowtie Overdrives. That's all it takes.

If I were to install an LS1 in my truck with an automatic, I'd go with the 4L60E that they come with, unless you're really into drag racing. The 4L60E can hold up to some power and you'll get overdrive and don't have to mess with any conversion headaches.

Of course if I put an LS1 in my truck, I'd go with a six speed, but I'm a little biased

I would like to see someone put a new 5.3L in on of these trucks. I think it would be cheaper to purchase the engine than the LS1, just because there are so many more of these out there.

Check out www.ls1tech.com for more information than you need to know about the LS1.

You can put a non-electronic tranny behind it just fine if you just reprogram the ECM to think it's got a manual behind it - all it needs from a manual car is the speed!

To answer a few questions:

To put in a ls1 from a F-body, you need to notch a little bit of frame away to clear for the ac compressor. The ls1 has a distributerless ignition, so firewall clearance isn't an issue. My firewall is modified to fit a ls1 ac unit, not because of the motor to sheetmetal clearance.

Horsepower is about 325 stock I beilive- I wont be running cats, and will have a low restriction exhust... dont know how much it will add.

Im running a 4l60e, wich is an automatic 4 spd.

BTW that picture was taken about a 1.5 yrs ago, looks alot different now... still not done.

i called the local yard that sells the late model motors to alot of streetrodders and for $3,500 i can get a 5.3 with trans and all acc.,exhaust, computer, everything i need. the 6.0 was $4,500. i called about a year ago for the LT1 and it was $4,000. i`m thinking about doing a 5.3 or 6.0 liter swap into my 68. they are great motors.

Looks good cb. Who's a/c kit are you going to use with the LS1 a/c compressor?

I'm not sure if there is a kit for the compressor, were using the stock ls1 compressor. We also used the stock F-body ac unit, we refabricated the firewall to fit the unit. (About 9 months worth of hell...) Definatily not a kit for that either. Not sure if that helped any?

My son posted the picture, etc. This is a father/son project that has gone out of control. The LS1 went in with the 4L60E trans and that was the start of several years of fabrication and what I can only call temporary insanity. Next came the '99 Camero A/C unit in the dash, the aluminum/plastic radiator and A/C condensor, and electric fans. Then a total custom dash with the '99 Camero cluster (160 mph speedo, tach, gages, etc. Then the '99 Camero tilt column so we would have cruise control and VATS. Then the pluse windshield wiper motor to go with the controls on the column. The '99 Camero A/C controls are incorporated in the custom dash along with a custom billet glove box and door. Custom console for the '99 shifter between 2001 Silverado seats. The gas tank is '99 Camero with the high pressure in-tank pump. The filler comes out on the top of the passenger step side fender. The gas filler door is from a '99 Cadillac. The rear disc brakes are '79 Seville. The flush door handles are from a 2001 Malibu. We installed the one piece window kit so we decided we needed the new style mirrors from a 2000 S10. This led to power windows, power door locks and power mirrors. Therefore we are now fab'ing custom door panels from a '99 Silverado to incorporate the electric GM contols for the electric door stuff. Oh i almost forgot...the aluminum LS1 prop shaft which required a custom machined yoke connected to a fresh 5-bolt 3.73 eaton posi. So far we have done it all without help. The paint however will go to Henry's Rods and Customs in Mesa, AZ. I think we will get help with the interior as well. It should be finished this spring.

CB, does the camaro LS1 mount the same as the truck style LS1? what did you use for motor mounts? i`ve been playing with the idea if swapping in a 5.3 truck LS1 stlye motor and so far the motor mounts are the only thing i`m concerned about. thanks

We used the '99 Camero upper rubber mounts that bolt to the engine and fabricated the lower metal brakets. The engine sets nice and low with the A/C compressor down in the frame rails.
