Re: Ford 300 Straight 6 in a Chevy AD?

But the 235 isn't going to bolt up to the mounts on a 48 frame, is it?

Replacing a 216 for a 235 is a common upgrade:

motor mounts:

'54 and later engines are not hard to find since there enough folks out there who want to swap in a V8.

Is a fully rebuilt 216 any competition power and mileage wise for a 235?

In my humble opinion, unless you are after a period correct restoration (and I know you are not), I do not feel that it is worth the money rebuilding the 216 or a pre '54 235. The older engines (babbit bearings) utilized a splash oil lub system which limits the performance potential. The later 235 are full pressure systems and the last years 59?-62 include a remote oil filter.

Since we are talking Stovebolt engines another alternative to consider is a 261, but harder to find:

What curmudgeon said. It is a common swap 216 to 235. I think you have to look at the water pump shaft length too. Make sure it is a full pressure oiling 235 as curmudgeon says. Also could talk to newfisher about his 250 in the burb he has. He would be a good resource for what you need to look out for.

I already found a 235 so case closed. But seller did say the water pump will be an issue. What's the solution to the shaft length?

Re: Ford 300 Straight 6 in a Chevy AD?

Take a look at the link from Patrick's web site. He mention using a short shaft water pump so the radiator does not have clearance issues. It is the link I posted right above your last message....

The solution is to use a water pump with a shorter shaft. What you need to think about is what the tranny will do to your set up. The old 216 and the 235 mounted by the front of the motor and the bell housing. If you got with the newer T5 5 Speed you will have to run a bell housing adapter and that will lose you the mounts for the rear of the engine. You can make some side mounts like a more modern engine fairly easy since the motor should have some unused bolt holes. You might also have to remove the stock cross member for the tranny and either have to make one or buy an aftermarket one.

If I remember correctly the Powerblock show Trucks did a 235 with a 700r4 in an AD truck a few years ago and showed the install. It should be similar to the T5. I remember watching it a few times after I got my truck and was thinking of going straight 6. Their episodes are available on their website. Even though those shows skip a lot of steps it can be nice to see it happen before your tackle it.

Too bad I didn't know you a month ago. I just pulled a perfectly good 235 out of a 57 Chevy 2 door for my uncle. We traded it and some other stuff for a 454 to mate to this Muncie 4 speed that's been in the garage for a while.
