I am going to run 20x8 wheels on my 48 and was wondering what's the widest tire I can fit without tubbing the bed? I know some of you guys are running 20's thats why I ask.

Not too many of them around as when you get over 17 or 18 the rims start dominating the truck and all you see is rims with a truck for a background.

The white truck built by the Gent from Rome Italy was one of the very few AD trucks with big rims that looks presentable and doesn't look like it came out of a hot wheels package at Target. I can't remember his handle on here nor could I find his build thread but the truck is spectacular.

I'm running 20's but mine are 10" wide and I have mini tubs. I think most people that run 20's are probably wider than 8 inches, that might be why there is little imput from anyone. Only a guess.

Nice truck youngrodder !!

To help answer your question; I had 18's & 20's on my '51 for 5 years. They were 18"x7" with 4" back space and 20"x8" with 4" b.s. Original frame with Mll front, 10 bolt rear and air-ride(front/rear). Truck is not tubbed and that was about as wide of wheel as I could go. Maybe a 1/4"-1/2" more back space front & rear is possible.
Tires were 225/40/18 and 245/35/20. Not a lot of rubber!!!

I changed to 17"(3 3/4" b.s. & 18"(4" b.s.) Artillery wheels 2 years ago for more rubber.

Thanks for the input guys! I am going to be using the spare steel wheels from a Nissan Armada (possibly with the holes filled in) with factory center caps for the AD. The overall look of a factory style wheel is what I am going for. I believe the "White Truck" mentioned is my motivator.

You are one that always goes that extra mile to get things right though. Looking at that truck you don't really notice the wheels until you dissect the whole truck as when one first looks at it you see a complete package and then notice the details one at a time and somewhere in that one detail at a time you take notice of the wheels and tires.

I like the pic. That white truck looks very sterile. I’m thinking about running a similar (Dlemo-ish) wheel tire combo on my 53 Suburban.

Yep, those rims do work on the long bed and they blend in with the rest of the truck so not to look like a wheel add rather than a truck photo.

Sometimes just because you can get them on the rig and the kid at the tire store thinks they are the coolest and newest thing going isn't a valid reason to put them on though..

The wheels and tires you choose to run quite often make or break the whole concept of the rig be they the "all I could afford 15 inch chrome spokes or 24's or something in between.

One thing to think about is the bolt pattern. Not sure what your running but is it a GM bolt pattern?? You may need an adaptor for those wheels and that may change the back space for clearance.

They are 6x5.5 same as GM. I am planning on using a 99 up 1/2 ton rear axle so this should work our to my advantage for backspace. The front is not a problem as I will modify factory GM components to suite my needs.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
