Disc Brake Conversion
I have a customer's 68 truck that his Dad bought new and I am in the process of making it mechanically sound and safer. It is a real nice Custom SWB truck with Factory AC, PS and an original 307/Powerglide. . The owner is real particular as to not make any real changes from when his Dad had the truck. I finally convinced him to allow me to do a Disc Brake upgrade, but I think I may have a problem doing it as the truck has the original wheels that I don't think will work with the Discs. Does anyone know if Discs will work with the 68 wheels, or will I have to change them out. I need to keep the truck 6 lug, so if I have to change them, will 71-72 blazer wheels work?
Thanks, Charles

Re: Disc Brake Conversion
i had a 69 in high school and went to a 8 in front / 10in rear wide wheel , i think they came off a toyota or new chevy at the time, i am sure that gives you more backspacing

Re: Disc Brake Conversion
There are companies that sell 6 lug disc brakes. However, you will need to change the wheels from pre-72 six lug wheels to 72-87 six lug wheels. The earlier wheels hit the caliper and wont allow the wheel to turn
You can tell what you have as the pre-72 have three nubs for the hub caps and the newer ones have four.

Thanks, I will have to have the nubs for the hub caps to go back on. I didn't think the original wheels would work, but if I can get the later wheels and paint them, the truck would still look original and keep the owner happy.

Re: Disc Brake Conversion
Charles,
You could do wheel spacers in front too but that would push the front out. I think you only need 1 inch. If you do the wheels, make sure to get 5 of them so he doesn't have to jockey things around if he needs to use the spare.

Re: Disc Brake Conversion
Do you really need discs? If it's just going to be a grocery getter, leave it on drums? It's such a nice unmolested specimen.......
