American Pie was the name of the airplane that Buddy Holly and company were in when they crashed and died.

Holly's death was considered the end of an era among Rock & Roll afficianados at the time -- the day the music died.
George Lucas made note of it in American Graffiti when Milner lamented that "Rock & Roll's been going down hill since Buddy Holly died."

Though only a year old at the time, this has always interested me as the plane crash happened on my first birthday.

One final bit of trivia, the person who gave up his seat on the plane to the Big Bopper was Waylon Jennings.

February 3rd, 1959: Within minutes of takeoff from the Mason City, IA Airport, at around 1:00 AM CST, the chartered Beech-Craft Bonanza airplane No. N3794N containing Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper crashes into the Iowa countryside, killing all three in addition to pilot Roger Peterson. The plane, headed for the next "Winter Dance Party" tour stop in Fargo, ND, had been chartered by Holly in order for the band members to travel in heated comfort and to arrive early for their next gig.
When he learned that band member Waylon Jennings had decided to take the freezing bus instead, Holly had joked, "Well, I hope your old bus freezes up." Jennings joked back, "Well, I hope your plane crashes.", a humorous but ill-fated response that haunted Jennings for the rest of his life. Another Holly band member, Tommy Allsup, flipped a coin with Valens for the last available seat, losing the coin toss. Valens exclaimed, "That's the first time I've won anything in my life!"
Pilot Peterson, not an instrument rated pilot and not having been informed of worsening weather conditions, decided to fly "on instruments," meaning without visual confirmation of the horizon, which led to the crash. The tragedy was later immortalized as "The Day The Music Died" by Don McLean in his famous song "American Pie."

This is an urban legend. Though Don McLean has been asked about the lyrics in his song many times over the years, he's been very reserved about discussing the lyrics.

He did admit, early on, that the song was a tribute to Buddy Holly. In 1999, in an interview, he stated:

The growing urban legend that "American Pie" was the name of Buddy Holly's plane the night it crashed, killing him, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper is equally untrue. I created the term.

In fact, Don McLean actually owns the trademark for "American Pie." There are quite a few sites that attempt to decipher the lyrics. I took an interest in it back in the early 00s, when my youngest son was a sophomore in high school and his class was given the assignment/task of writing about the song and interpreting the lyrics.
