Depends on which starter you use. With the offset bolt holes in the starter nose, like your 305 has, you would need the 14" 168 tooth flexplate. I can't remember if a 71 block will work with offset starters or not, but with a straight across bolt pattern on the nose it uses a 12-1/2" 153 tooth flexplate.

I would say it depends on what year block you have. If you have the staggered bolt pattern starter (normal with a small block) you'll need a 168-tooth flexplate/starter. Trust me, I know this from experience.

No a 168 tooth is not normal, or what you think is normal.

Most all small blocks are drilled and tapped for both starters. I have had many small blocks with straight across bolt patterns. But, not every small block will have both patterns. I suggest you wait until you see what the block you use has. A lot of the older blocks only had straight across patterns. I know this because I'm old and have changed many starters in my days.

I thought Big blocks were straight across and small blocks were staggered? (At least on chevy's) I could be wrong, because the old small block I've seen is a 75 (mine

Ask the builder, the small blocks can use either straight or stagger at least my block is that way.

and do yourself a favor,
get it lined up to be sure while it's on the engine stand,
or cherry picker before you put it in.

or just buy a mini starter with multiple mount positions for 153 or 168, thats where I am heading now.
