I think I am in need of a new starter. Mines has gotten hot because of the headers I even replaced the Solenoid a couple of times until I installed a "remote" one. Anyway what do you know about the small hi-torque ones. Are they worth the money? I am going to get the battery checked but mine is really hard to start. The starter is 12 years or so old.

yea,for the price of a starter i would buy one if your getting stuck because it wont start,my friend has one of those mini ones,good quality and turnes over pretty fast,and when you buy a new starter a heat shield is worth the time to put it on, (i think they are like $10? )

I was having the same trouble even with a remote solenoid,my headers were very close to the starter, I now use a GM Delco Remy high torque mini starter, it's a great little starter,80% more torque than a standard GM high torque unit, draws less amps and only weighs 8 pounds, heres a pic to show just how small it is.

I have the same starter as Blazerman on my 69, while my motor has not been started, it fits excellent, quite a ways from my headers, cause its so small. And it turns over my motor with ease and spins it pretty fast, has a 11 tooth gear instead of stnadard Chevy 9, but bolts up to any 168 tooth flexplate or flywheel, I think it was worth it.

These are great items. Highly recommended.
Why do you think GM uses them on new vehicles now?

Actually, come to think of it, if you are in a pinch, check the wrecking yards. I know my '97 Z28 has a nice small one on it. And it will bolt right up.

I was burning up a starter every six months on my 402. switched to a mini starter and haven't had a problem since. Try it, you'll like it!
