difference b/t flywheel and flexplate??
i am planning on getting a 383 stroker for my 67 chevy. it currently has a 350 engine and the original 4 spd. The guy ho built the 383 said that he built it for an automatic tranny so he said that i need to change the flexplate or flywheel (not sure what one) is this true?? can i just switch the one that is on my 350 right now with the one on the 383, or are the two balanced differently. Any help or general information would be greatly appreciates as i really dont know what im talking about. this is my first restoration so i am still learning right now.
thanks, 67pro-street |

Flex plate = auto tranny
Fly Wheel = manual tranny If they are both internally balanced or externally balanced the same way then it should work. I can't tell you whether this is the case with these particular motors, so someone else will have to chime in. I can tell you that yes, you will need to change them between the two motors at least. |

most likely the 383 is externaly balanced. some after market companies sell internaly balanced cranks but they are expensive. you will need a externaly balanced flywheel. you can also check with a local machine/speed shop and see if they can find you a "balance plate". this bolts up with the stock 350 flywheel for use on external motors. it`s cheaper than buying a new flywheel but probably not as good as a external flywheel. my buddy had a plate on his 406 with no problems but you never know.

Is correct Flex plate = auto tranny Fly Wheel = manual tranny The problem is you need to find out which crankshaft you have. If it is a turned down 400 crank you will need the damper and flywheel or flex plate for a 400 (externally balanced) If it is a manufactured stroker crank that has been internally balanced you can use the damper and flywheel or flex plate from your 350 (internally balanced)

And the big ass stick that gets thrown into the spokes and tossing you over the handlebars...
Not many 400 small block vehicles had manual trannys bolted to them...therfor, very few externally ballanced fly wheels. Oh, most machine shops won't even consider ballancing a flywheel for a 400. |
