Rochester carb swap/ replacement

looking for a replacement for my ailing carter quadrajet. will any quadrajet bolt on to my stock intake or will i need to change stuff around? or are there better options edelbrock or holley that will suit my needs? needs being daily driver with occasional towing.

also where are the casting numbers on these? might rebuild it after i swap it

I'd just rebuild the quadrajet you have. I just finished and its not that hard asst all. The model number is stamped vertically on the drivers side towards the back.

thats what i was thinking. but im afraid i may have a warped air horn in the carb (its making a weird whistle noise) so im wondering if id be better off just changing it out

Since u said "its making a weird whistle noise", I'd be looking for a vacuum leak--not around air horn, but usual places like base-mounting gasket, vac-hoses, pwr-brake hose, manifold "vacuum trees", intake surfaces. Stopping such a vac leak may cure your "ailing carb" symptoms.

If air horn is warped you'd more than likely find a fuel leak--but not a vac leak. Ever tried to run an engine, in the shop, with air horn completely removed from top of a quadrajet? May reveal a lot of surprises.

I'd send it to Carb Connection in Kirkland WA or some other expert QJet rebuilder. I've also had moderate luck with Stage II Qjets from "Jet", but have also heard that the rebuilders get a lot of them fresh off the shelf to be redone.

Anyway, QJets are such a flexible carb that pretty much anything will run with any QJet, but to run well or properly it's going to need a knowledgeable tuneup whether its new or rebuilt. Besides, even if rebuilt perfectly to factory specs or replaced with an NOS perfect one, fuel is different than when they built the calibration into them 40 years ago.
