Flat or Gloss paint?

I got this rendering done with the intent of getting a flat paint job but now I'm not so sure. What do you guys think should I stick with the flat or go gloss? I like the flat look but I'm worried this style might fade out as where the gloss look always will look good.

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

You mean satin, right? I don't think anyone would want a flat paint job. My opinion would be gloss on such a refined project like that.

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

Don't chase styles man. You'll be forever chasing something you can't keep for very long. It's your truck, you do what you like and to h*** with what anyone else thinks.

I more or less HATE my truck's color but my dad loved it, loved it enough to get a loan to buy it new, drive it for 20 years, and offer it to me if I never tried any vices till at least 21, which I never did. My dad was KNOWN by "that yellow truck" and I hope to be also. I've even come to like that color now (pink with white spots) (just kidding = ochre).

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

Personally, I think the flat paint thing is just a passing "style" just like "patina". In a few years it will be something else. Remember graphics in the 90's?

Nice classy glossy paint on a well restored or customized vehicle will always be cool.

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

I think it's easier to maintain glossy paint then satin. Glossy will be "in style" for ever

Well just m o , nothing with trucks and cars the way there built ever go out of style as long as they are done right , And your project is looking really nice. You change it when and then if you think . I seen many of the same real nice trucks and cars over the years and like seeing them still.

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

Gloss. Maintenance is much easier on a base/clear paint scheme. If you get a scratch in satin you cannot polish it out. The polished area would then be shiny. The more you wash a satin car the more you are polishing it. Hence after time you will have a blotchy paint job. With a high end paint job with good materials the UV protection is in the clear, not the base. So if you want the paint to last a lifetime looking as good as it did when you completed it, go with the high end base/clear.

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

I think if you like satin, paint it satin, if you like gloss, then gloss it up. Trends come and go but it's your wallet and your eyes staring at it every day that really matter. Those wheels on that rendering are very trendy right now. Good bad or otherwise satisfy yourself first. Unless you're married, then compromise!

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

I had my truck painted a satin... or as my painter say's “egg shell”
The process is still a two part job, base coat with clear only a flatting agent was added to the clear coat. All the protection and longevity as any other paint.

Don't be overly concerned with styles changing, its your truck so paint it what makes you happy.

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

If you build a trendy truck today you'll have a dated truck tomorrow.
Wheels are a lot easier to change than paint.

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

I did satin because of all the gloss around here. But I wanted a theme, shop style with everything new. I want em' to say nice ride when you paint it, I smile and go.

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

As everyone says satin or glossy is up to you. With modern paints, satins hold up well. I have been pondering the same issue because I'm not a fan of black or red, mine's current state (red w/ black primered hood/fenders). lol

i have seen some decent painters use Hot Rod flats and have gotten tiger stripes sometimes not.

I've read about the hot rod flatz paint and most comments were negative. Then I look at pictures and see beautiful paint jobs with it. The only thing I can think is the negative comments are people whom don't prep correctly, don't mix correctly, or don't really have experience working with the paint. I didn't read anything pertaining to the durability and UV resistance though.

Why not both? Paint it gloss single stage acrylic and let it fade

Re: Flat or Gloss paint?

I decided on Flat Yellow and Flat Orange for my CJ5 project. I did a test panel (passenger fender) and laid down orange first. The laid down the yellow. Then to play with patina, I sanded down the most exposed areas through the yellow down to the orange. It isn't what I expected but I think I might go with it. After awhile there will be enough road rash and scratches from the bush that the paint will just be secondary rust protection.

So the thing is IF you can experiment try it and see if you like it. I really like your rendering and have always liked the baby blue color n these trucks. I guess what I'm suggesting is paint one fender one way the other the second choice and see what you think side by side?!?

My CJ patina experiment might just move forward because its got the original yellow paint and the primer is showing through and this will mimic it... but I know what I'm getting. I didn't have any problems with the hot rod flatz but I'm no really good enough to know the difference.
I say go with what YOU like cuz YOU will have to stare at it more than anyone else.
