Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

I am trying to shop for suspension parts for my dad on a budget and I am scouring ebay for the lowest prices. It seems like MOOG is twice as much as Partsmaster and some other generics.

I need:

Inner and outer tie rods both side
Idler Arm

I've already got MOOG everything else.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

I have found Moog items like ball joints ,tie rod ends and moving jointed items better quality but have found pitman arm, drag link and bushings reboxed and renamed with moog name on the box or vs. versa generic box with moog parts inside.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

For a lower ball joint with the best chance of fitting snugly into our worn/old lower control arms, yes.

If you weld the lower ball joints anyway. No.

Over all, they will last longer than the off shore parts. But, if its not going to see 15000 miles per year, you prolly won't wear out the off shore parts too quickly either.

I have also purchased moogs in generic boxes. It comes as a nice suprize when it happens.

^^^^ I agree - Yes.
I totally rebuilt my front suspension 2 years ago exclusively with MOOG parts.

I can only echo the positives here. Over the years, through trial and error, I've made a personal decision to buy ONLY Moog suspension parts.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

yes-I put offshore ball joints on one truck-they were wayy too stiff, when you turned the wheel it stayed turned. Had one joint that was sloppy, rest were too stiff. If you are getting non-MOOG stuff in MOOG box it is the suppliers, not MOOG-parts suppliers re-box stuff all the time, and it is the main reason stuff don't fit.

They re-box everything when a warehouse changes lines, like from Airtex fuel pumps to Spectra Premium pumps. They put all the Airtex pumps in Spectra boxes. Had a guy last year re-box all our Omega power steering hoses to Edelmann-first thing I sold was a throttle cable for 82 chevy pickup-had a clutch cable for a Mustang in the box.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

I sell both MOOG and PARTSMASTER. From what i understand partsmasters are made basicly by moog. But they are made cheeper. MOOG is number 1. On a buget partsmaster. But you will get longer life from the MOOG.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

I used a chinese lower ball joint on my truck and fter OEM failed. went about 100 miles and guess what, yep it failed. I rebuilt my suspension with Moog after that. about 7K miles and no weird noises or failures.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

Yes, Moog is worth it opposed to the alternative. We as a country need to STOP buying "Made in China" when we can and this is one of those situations. If there is a part made anywhere but China....BUY IT.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

Parts geek.com...heres for a 65 C10

http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/196...e_rod_end.html

http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/196...idler_arm.html

I just got upper and lower A arm shafts and bushings from them....completely satisfied for $13 per kit. They were better quality than the LMC cross shafts I put on my 64 C10 last year.

Right on. Yeah I'm shopping for the 1980-1987 stuff since I bought all of the suspension from an '80 donor.

All I have left to buy is the inner and outer tie rods now. I'm going to hold out for MOOG.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

made the mistake of using junk balljoints, might have 150 miles on them & I'm going to have to pull it all back apart to redo it. the boots are already splintering into pieces. i will be using MOOG forever more.

I am a fleet manager for a city with over 400 vehicles, not counting equipment.

We have tried it all, the cheap stuff fails. You will get much longer life out of moog.

You get what you pay for!

partsgeek sells moog. Compare to local. Shipping might make the price differential moot.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

I find that this USED to mean a lot more than it does today. When I used to work at NAPA in another life, we sold a few dfferent lines of parts for the suspension. Usually a Premium and a Regular, or a Service and Professional, the idea stays the same.

What I found out is that there isn't always a consistent difference. For example, "PREMIUM" cv's and drivetrain stuff used to always come from Dana/Spicer. It was US made, and worth the 3-4$ extra bucks. That changed to A1 Cardone, then changed again. Now, I frankly don't know what your getting.

When I shopped for a Pitman for my 66, there was a HUGE difference in quality. The "premium" unit looked like stock, and was THICK cast pedal with a nice firm joint. They cheaper version was over a 1/4" thinner in all measurements. On a piece like a pitman, that makes a massive difference.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

Moog is the way to go but also look into XRF Chassis parts. Premium parts, manafactured in Canada, shipped to Michigan and distributed from there. They use Moog p/n's, usually about 40% cheaper

MOOG!!! I believe you should have enough evidence now to sway you in the right direction.. I would suggest shopping around also. I bought MOOG everything for my
'66 from ROCKAUTO and I spent less then I would've spent on the local o'reilys store brand (junk)..

This sounds like a case of you get what you pay for.
sometimes cheaper parts mean cheaper parts.
I know what your saying though when your on a tight budget.

Re: Are the MOOG suspension parts really worth double?

We used new Moog stuff for my '66 front suspension, all of which I bought through a friend who knew the owner of a Carquest. I haven't been able to test everything since the truck is still down.

On my '93 S-10 I also rebuilt the entire front suspension with Moog. I made all purchases online with Advance Auto Parts. I used coupon codes from retailmenot.com to save money. You can create multiple orders combining certain parts as necessary to meet the pricing limits for the various discount codes, which in essence will save you even more. I placed my orders & was able to pick up 95% of what I needed in-store. So yeah, shop around. Rock Auto is good too.
