Question 14 bolt conundrum

So.....I have the opportunity to get either a 3/4 ton ff with gov-lock or a 1-ton single wheel with out posi that I can slap right in. My question is, which would you get and why? They are the same price.

Re: 14 bolt conundrum

Get the one with the locker. If it is a true 1 ton srw then it is the same a le as the 3/4 ton ff.

Re: 14 bolt conundrum

If I were to get the 3/4-ton rear I would have to move the perches and I am pretty sure, swap the shock mounts to the other side. If I were to get the 1-ton rear all the mounts and perches are where I need them and could just slap it in with some mods to the parking brake.

Re: 14 bolt conundrum

Personally, I would go with the 1 ton unit because it will have bigger brakes than the 3/4 ton unit, and I have had bad experiences with Gov-locs when the clutches start to disintigrate. you just don't know what condition the Gov-loc is in when you buy a used axle.

cleszkie....That is what I was thinking but wanted as much feedback as possible to try to make the right decision.

Re: 14 bolt conundrum

Are the 3/4 and 1 ton axles out of the ssame generation of truc (73-88 or 89-98)? If so i believe the mounts are the same. Also, every 3/4 full floater i have worked on had the same brakes as a 1 ton. Basically a 14 bolt full floater is a 1 ton axle. There are two different widths. One ton srw, dually and 3/4 tonare the same. 1 ton cab and chassis is narrower.

I agree with that statement. For what it's worth, pick the one that's going to go in the easiest with the least amount of fab.

I would avoid the gov-loc too, though the ones in 14bolts are better than the half ton units.

Re: 14 bolt conundrum

There were 3 different brake sizes on the 14 bolt, early years had small drums and are popular with guys that want to run 15" wheels on a full floater. The mid 70s on up used 2 different sizes on 3/4 ton with the 13 drum being the biggest and all 1 tons got that size. The 3/4 ton, 1 ton SRW and 1 ton C&C all used the same axle housing and axle shafts with the differences being in the hubs and backing plates. 1 ton DRW had a wider housing than the rest but used the same hubs as the C&C.

Re: 14 bolt conundrum

SO I have another question. If the price was right, would you purchase both and swap the govlock into the 1 ton unit and then sell the 3/4 ton unit so I could have some sort of traction control?
