Re: little issue

Could be points, could be coil, could be plug wires, could be fuel filter or something else. What do you mean by busting out? I picture the engine escaping through the hood. Is the problem in the middle RPM range or higher? Does it only happen at wide open throttle or half throttle?

Re: little issue

If I knew what "Busting Out" means I'd be able to give a better answer. If you mean backfiring and stuff, could be ignition, valves, timing chain, or a number of things.

If you mean it bogs and falls over until it recovers, probably accelerator pump, like a ripped diaphragm.

Or you're missing some of the original drivability pieces like the heat riser, heat stove, heat crossover, enclosed air cleaner with snorkel, etc... all that stuff was there not for emissions (usually) but to prevent bogging and stumbles when cold.

Either way, if the vehicle or its reliability is at all important, it's time for a tuneup. Stick a Pertronix or cheaper module into the distributor to get rid of the points. New plugs, wires, PCV, etc. And it if its not perfect after that, check compression. If that looks ok, check leakdown.

Re: little issue

i had a bad set of plugs once that caused popping out the carb at higher RPMS, they were brand new, pulled them out and put in another set, fixed the problem,

i would also make sure your choke is opening all the way and not closing

Rotor, cap, plug gap, coil ground, resistance wire not removed but updated distributor used... still lots of ignition issues to chase if you like.

Just be glad its not supercharged. I've chased too many "spark cannot cross the gap at more than 12psi because of increased air density" issues in my life to know it can be finicky.

Does it start popping immediately when you floor it, or only once the revs come up under that load? Anything weak in the ignition system can cause a breakup once the cylinder pressures come up, as they will when you go to WOT.

Another things to check would be to run it somewhere completely dark, with no lights on at all (ideally outside so you don't gas yourself). If its dark enough you can usually track down arcing (plug to manifold, wire to heat riser tube, whatever) to rule that out as well.

Again, do NOT run your vehicle inside a closed building. Carbon monoxide is poisonous and deadly.

Re: little issue

Pop the valve covers off and crank it over without starting it and watch the rockers.
You could have a flat lobe on your cam.
