Todays puzzler. What's it called.

What's the name of the little round clip thingy that holds the parking brake cable on the drum backing plate? I'm looking for the type that has the little prongs that need to be compressed in, to remove the cable on a ford axle.
There must be a specific name, because I've tried searching clamp, retainer, clip, and I can't find them in my catalogs, or online.

Not sure what it's called, but you'll probably have to buy it in a kit I would guess?

Never mind...I re-read your post and determined that I had found the wrong clip. Ford, huh? Can you post a pic of where it goes?

Stupid photobucket it's showing the edited photo. It's the round clip piece on the small horizontal spring that looks kind of like a badminton birdie.

Re: Todays puzzler. What's it called.

i dont think there is a specific name for that tension clip you are refering too . although the best way to get it released in to use a very small hose clamp - put it at the back of the tension fingers and tighten it up - fingers will compress enough to slide it out a little and release

This one is on the crimped cable assembly and is not meant to be taken off of the cable. Contact "The Right Stuff" (getdiscbrakes.com), or your favorite supplier for a new CABLE. If you're really lucky they might sell you just the retainer, but I don't know how you're going to disassemble/re-assemble the cable.

Re: Todays puzzler. What's it called.

As Daze57 and Bob aka Drainsportgarage said it doesn't come off and as Daze57 suggested the simple way to take it off is use a small hose clamp and squeeze the ends in so they slip through the hole in the backing plate. I don't know of any replacement for that end and don't know if you could salvage one off another cable and put it on yours if yours is damaged.

The release tool for it is LISLE 40750 it is part of the cable and can't be purchased separately.

Re: Todays puzzler. What's it called.

Or you could slip a 12 point wrench over it and rotate the wrench up and down while pulling the cable housing out of the backing plate.

Boo. The guy I got the rear end from, cut the cables about a foot in front of the drums. I was hoping to fab up a custom cable set up because I'm planning on changing my parking brake pedal to a lever.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to get replacement cables and go from there.
Thanks for all the help!

Classic Tube (www.classictube.com) makes cables so they would have those clips. I don't know how you would get the old one off though, as the cable ends aren't removable.

Well, that would be a game-changer if you're able to fab a cable. You should be able to find an old cable with that retainer in the junkyard. Just cut it up and you've got your part.

Conversely, '69 Nova rear cables run $25 each at The Right Stuff (Columbus, Ohio). If you told them the total length of the cable and sheave and the type of rear end I'm sure they could make a couple for you in about that price range. (Actually, you might be able to tell them the year of the truck and rear end type and they'd be able to figure it out.)

Re: Todays puzzler. What's it called.

PARK CABLE REMOVER TOOL,go buy the lisle tool or take 1 or 2 of them tiny give -away slotted screw drivers -bend one a little in the middle of the driver-slip it between the backing plate and cable -pry the outward clips inward and partially pry the cable towards the front of the vehicle-when it moves partially push in on the outward side clips and it should be somewhat out /so the clips are in the hole /so the cable will come out ? good luck mike

Re: Todays puzzler. What's it called.

I've been using a cheap set of flare nut wrenches to compress those spring clips for years. Tap the wrench down over the end of the clip and presto! They're compressed. And it gives you some leverage to move the cable if needed as you pull it out of the backing plate.

If you are changing your whole parking brake setup you should give Control Cables a call or go to their website. They can make the cables to your measurements.

LOL, solidaxle, but I doubt you are "much" older than me. I was born four months before WW2 started so that definitely puts me in the "Senior Citizen" range.

I can identify with the easy to confuse part, though.
