transfer case questions

Hi guys, I just bought a 700R4 tranny and transfer case out of a 88 chevy 1/2 ton. I'd like to put the tranny in my 70 blazer. I'm guessing the transfer case won't work, the front output appears to be on the wrong side. What transfer case can I use for this application? Anyone have anything available near southern Illinois? Thanks, Willie

You can use an NP205 transfer case with a TH350 adapter and an Advance Adapters shaft in the 700R4. Do a search. This conversion has alot of coverage.

Thanks Breeh, I used the search feature and got a lot of good info on the 205. That route seems like it will be pretty expensive. Can you bolt up a 208 to this tranny and use it in the blazer? I've heard they were weak though, is that something I should stay away from? Willie

I really don't know anything about the 208 case other than it is a chain drive case and is not as strong as the 205 which is gear driven.

I converted my 3-on-the-tree/NP205 4x4 to a TH350/NP205. In my narrow little mind it was the best move I've ever made with this truck. When doing the conversion I decided NOT to go with a 700r4 because I mostly tow with this vehicle and since you shouldn't tow in overdrive with that transmission I went with the th350.

It has been two years or better now and I've had a lot of time to think about it. And drive it.

Now I wish I would have went with the 700r4. A lot of people think they are weaker and the first couple of years they were. However if you tow only in drive, and don't have a fire breathing big block in front of it, it should last as long as a th350.

Not to mention in a truck like mine with 373 rear end gears it probably will extend the life of the engine by keeping it at lower rpms on the highway.

I wish I would have gone overdrive so bad I recently bought a 700r4 core. When I get the advanced adapters output shaft I'll take it and the tranny to a well regarded rebuilder, have it rebuilt, and get it in there.

To make a long story short your Blazer probably already has the NP205. Suck it up, buy the advanced adapter output shaft, and do it right the first time. I wish I did.

Thanks for the responses fellas I wish it were simple as converting my 205 but that's not the case. For some reason (which no one can explain) my factory 4 spd came with a Dana 20 transfer case. The transfer case broke the rear output shaft so that led me to opt to put an automatic in. I guess I will have to find a auto 205 with its shifter and adapter and go that route. Does anyone know if a 208 will bolt right up to my 700R4? That would be the other option I guess. If anyone else has any suggestions feel free to contribute, I think I'm going to call my local 4x4 shop tommorow and see what he has to say. Thanks again, Willie

I'm from out in the country near Venedy, or Okawville Illinois. I don't know if I'll go for a 208 or not, I'm just trying to get my Blazer back together and save some $. ---- Willie
