Re-pop Tailgates

I have been searching locally for a used tailgate for my fleetside in good condition. I have been unsuccessful so I am considering buying a new one when I purchase a new passenger side door. Does anyone have experience with the re-pop tailgates? how is their fitment and quality? Any brands you would recommend?

Re: Re-pop Tailgates

They are flimsey, sure doesn't fit like the original (maybe the original and bed were bent together?), showed up with dents, is now cracked under the tailgate handle.

Re: Re-pop Tailgates

Thanks for the advice so far. Good condition oem parts are hard to come by these days. I check Craigslist several times a day and scour the internet.

Re: Re-pop Tailgates

It all depends on the stamping press die. Over the course of stamping the metal, the dies need replaced, and begin to not stamp (bend/form the metal) correctly if left unchanged. The newer the die, the better more accurate the stamp / piece quality.

Re: Re-pop Tailgates

Everyone who lacks body work experience, should watch Stacey David's "Gears" series on building a LWB into a SWB. He built the "CopperHead" show truck years ago, now he has done this more practical build using mostly repop parts.
You have to "make it fit", before you paint it.
Repop TGs are straight, rustfree and no bondo. A nice GM TG in that condition sells for $600-$800 and no the repops are not "flimsy" anymore. The original smooth TGs were very thin and some people think they must still be made that way---NOPE!
With a little work, they really look good.

What brand tailgate are you referring to. What brand, in your opinion, is the best out there?

Re: Re-pop Tailgates

I got mine from CLASSIC PARTS OF AMERICA and it is a great replacement tailgate. Mine was a plain version and I did the handle relocation on it.

This is good to hear Frank as this is the direction I am going. When I'm done my truck, it will have repop Fenders, core support, hood and bed on it. So far so good with the front clip as it fits really well with minimal adjustment needed. And as Frank stated all of these parts are rust free and straight to start with. You may have to tweak them a little to make them fit but it sure as hell beats fixing rust and taking the chance it comes back on you. And if I can remember correctly I thought all the panels on Copperhead were repop too.
