What is the Original stock steering ratio for a 1967 C-20... I want a faster shorter turn for my truck and I really do not want to do Rack n Pinon...

Re: Question For the board
Your original steering box should be 4 full turns +, to get a faster steering box you'll need to look at the gear boxes for newer trucks in the late '70's and '80's,
they will be 3 turns.

Re: Question For the board
No need, all you need to do is purchase a newer year model gear box and install it. The mounting holes are all the same, and the pitman arm might be different splines between the two so you might be best to buy one of those as well, (it's been to long since I did this swap).
This is an easy and straight forward upgrade. There are many threads that have discussed this swap. Look for them, I know in the past three months there has been talk about doing the swap.

Re: Question For the board
I'm guessing the OP has manual steering?
Somewhat different technique is needed for manual steering as well as greasing the crap out of the front end parts. I'd sort of pop the clutch to unload the front end and then start turning the wheel. Manual steering is fine when the vehicle is moving. Planning where to park so you don't have to crank the wheel much before moving is also good. Remember angled parking on streets, and now parallel parking? Power steering allowed the evolution... |
