cluthch question

I am in the process of rebuilding my daughters 66 and originally thought I would go with an automatic tranny so I threw away the clutch and flywheel. Dumb mistake, she decided she liked the idea of a 3 on the tree. I bought a new flywheel from rockauto and need to order the clutch kit. I am putting a rebuilt 350 in it so I need to know which clutch to put it in it since I am not using the original engine. 11" or 12"? how many splines? any other info would be appreciated. Truck is down to bare frame rebuilt from the ground up and I am ready to put the engine and tranny in before I mount the cab back.

Thanks

Re: cluthch question

Should be 27 spline and probably the 10" clutch. Some take the 11" clutch

I think you are thinking of the rear axle spline. The clutch should be a 10t, 1 1/8"

are you sure that it is not 10 spline on input?
i think at 27 spline that you are talking later year output spline. you can get a flywheel for either size clutch. personally i would go with the 11". little harder to slipesp if she hasn't driven a std before.
there are also 2 different size ring gears depending on which starter that you are going to use

Re: cluthch question

Flywheel is a RHINOPAC / WORLD CAR 167654 from rockauto for a 12" clutch. I think I may have been over thinking this. looks like a 1 1/8 10t since that is all they offer. I put a 78 chevy front end underneath it and think I might have mixed up the years when looking up parts.

Does 92.00 sound about right for the kit. I haven't done a clutch in about 20 years or so.

thanks guys

Re: cluthch question

If you're using the stock cast iron bellhousing, I'm not sure the larger flywheel will fit. I've heard that SOME of the smaller flywheels are drilled for either the 10" or 11" clutch, but have never been able to confirm that.

Re: cluthch question

You should be able to use the RHINOPAC / WORLD CAR Part # 04505 which is an 11". It may not be the correct throwout bearing in the kit so plan to buy a bearing for the year of the transmission.

Re: cluthch question

I'm showing the part number to be 04502 in a 12 " clutch to match the flywheel I bought. Can I still use the smaller clutch? Is it the flywheel that may cause clearance issues or the clutch/pressure plate on a 12" clutch? Boy I wish I had saved that clutch.

Re: cluthch question

In Rock Autos description of the flywheel it says you can use either

Diaphragm Option; Flywheel Spec: FLAT
With 11" Clutch; Flywheel Spec: FLAT
With 12" Clutch, Lever Style; Flywheel Spec: FLAT

Re: cluthch question

It should be a 168 tooth flywheel.
Your probably good with an 11" clutch. Buy the throw out bearing to match your trans and clutch type.
ie different thickness for mechanical linkages and hydraulic systems. I discovered this the hard way

Re: cluthch question

honestly a 10.5" clutch would hold a 350 no problems, i have a 10.5" valeo on my pontiac 462, 500 ft lbs of torque dynoed. I think in 66 327 came with 12", and others with 11". I'm just going to put a 12" on my 66 because that's what i took off. Valeo is a nice cheap street clutch, i've had good luck with them. Larger diameter the diaphragm clutch, slightly more pedal travel it takes to fully release. Likely not an issue in these trucks, they have pedal travel for days.
