Just tap the head. The size the metric hole is vs a 1/8 NPT sensor (I think that's it?) is very little.

The temp sensors in 67-72s are 1/2 inch NPT and is much bigger than the threaded metric hole in the LS heads

oops....my mistake. I thought we were talking about an LS head and aftermarket sensor. my temp gauge is an autometer and not the OEM.

i didnt have any trouble getting it done with the engine in the truck. (A/C stuff is out right now tho). but i just drilled it out and used a ratcheting wrench to tap it. worked great.

Maybe I'm lazy but for use with a stock gauge, I'm not sure why you would'nt go with this. It's clean looking and easy.

did you drill and tap the head or turn down and tap sender -- I'm wanting to use my stock gauge on a 68.

I purchased 323092 and bolted it on. Have not tested or used it yet though.

I've drilled and tapped the head on 3 or 4 swaps, it isn't hard if you have the correct size drill bit for the tap, and yes, it's a BIG bit. I start with smaller bits and work my way up, putting grease on the bits and tap to catch the shavings. This is a factory '72 sensor in my current 5.3 swap.

Nice. It didn't look like there was much room between the hole and my exhaust manifold.

I think now that my engine is in I'll just tap the block plug. I just need to find a 23/32" bit.

For the old school sbc some aftermarket intakes have 1/2" npt on the intake near waterneck.

Many of the short waterpumps also have 1/2" npt port on top. I would think this spot would work as well. Haven't tried it so don't quote me on that one. I would think the one on the side of the wp would read the suction side of wp and wouldn't be accurate for engine temp., although it might be handy to know what the outlet temp of the radiator is.

Don't know if this will help for the original post which was about a 91 gauge cluster, if u get a sender from a 99 firebird it has 3 wire terminals, u can get a pigtail too, the plugs are realllllllyyyy easy to take apart, jus hook the two factory wires in the same spot then use the third for your temp gauge, no adaptors or machining required and the ohms are the same, I did that on mine and it matches the computer reasons exactly and we have measured it with a infered gauge and is right on, hope this helps. Also that sender will fit on either head.

The sender has to be from a firebird, they were the only ones that had the 3 wire setup!

I picked up an M12 x 1.5 die, and a 3/8 factory sender, put the sender probe section in my drill with a file in my vise, spun it until it was the size I needed. then hit it with the dye, worked out great. Pictures here http://carburetorssuck.com/index.php...ulletin&blog=8
