Cutting front coil springs

Does anyone know approximately how much coil to cut to get the equivalent of 1.5 inch drop. Have a brand new pair of stock sb springs and am running an aluminum headed sbc. Thought I might try this before buying another pair of springs.

Thanks

Re: Cutting front coil springs

You might only get 1.5" from one coil, especially if you have an aluminum headed motor. Cutting 1/2 of the first coil will get you a little more than the thickness of the spring wire. Any coil after the first full one returns a 2" or more drop.

Make sure the top of the spring correctly seats back onto the guide area in the crossmember spring pocket, especially if making a 1/2 coil cut and rotating the spring so the bottom fits into the retaining pocket on the lca. The top guide may have to be massaged a little for the spring to fit over it in that case.

BTW, don't do what the PO of my truck did and cut the top of the spring off.
