What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

I need to replace my driveshaft (single). What are the differences in length? I have a 700r4 trans with a 10 bolt. I need to know so I can find one at the salvage yard.

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

The turbo 350 and 700r4 use the same yoke. So if youare replacing a 350 with a 700 you can use the same driveshaft. Unless it's alot older and has a th350 with a long tailshaft and the 700 is a short shaft.

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

Thanks for the info. Got any idea what the overall lengths are? How many splines in the yoke. I don't want to make several trips.

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

27 splne not 28.

th350 long tail and 700r4 short tail different? I don't think so 700r4 is the same don't think they have any other tailshafts, as for differences I think the LONG tail th350 and 700r4 are close to the same, a short tail is the same as a 3 speed manuaul trans, or car 4 speed, and needs a longer driveshaft.

Trust me I got an 84 sitting outside right now with a long tail th350 and a short tail th350 in the bed in need of a longer driveshaft that I'm having trouble finding.

The driveshaft in the truck now is 61 inches overall from the tip end of the yoke to the back end around the u joint with a 10 bolt, 55-1/2 center of one u joint to center of the other, and 57 inches outside of one u joint to outside of the other NO yoke. I gotta find one 3 inches longer.

th350 short tail 6 inch tail, long tail 9 inch, and they also had a 12 inch

I don't think that first link is right, the th350 short tail is like 1-1/2 or 2 inches shorter then a 700r4. This one I beleive is more correct...

[QUOTE=benoit454;4068561]27 splne not 28.

You counting the raised splines on the tailshaft or the raised splines on the driveshaft yoke? Makes a difference.

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

just going by what the info says up top 27 spline. Not sure which it is. I think when I counted the raised ridges in the slip yoke it had 26? lol

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

Short shaft th350 is a 6 inch tailshaft and is 3 inches shorter than the 700r4. Mid shaft th350 which is 9 inches is almost exactly the same length at the 700r4. Long shaft th350's are 12 inch and very rare would be 3 inches longer than the 700r4. The 700r4 comes in 2 lengths but only transmissions out of vettes are different. The only one you will come across will be the standard unit out of trucks and regular cars. This chart should help http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/trans_dims.asp

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

The driveshaft yoke I have is 26 raised splines with a wide non splined gap between first and last. It's hard to tell the overall length (twisted). It appears to be between 55 and 55.5 inches. I'm not swapping the transmissions. My truck came with a 700r4 but a minor mishap brings me to needing a driveshaft. Thanks for all the info.

My yoke is the same 26 with a big gap between the 2.

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

Well I received a driveshaft today. The length and the splines are the same. The only difference is the new to me (older) driveshaft has external clips for the ujoint and the 90 model 10 bolt uses the internal clip style. I don't know if I can make it work or not. The only ujoints I see listed are external or internal not both together.

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

they do have both together my friend, go to autozones website and put in like a 90 model truck u joint, or look for the 3r to 1310 or 3r to 1330 u joints they are combo u joints.

The factory gm 3r had the plastic retaining them and the replacements use inside c locks and then the other uses the outside as you said.

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

So to get this straight if you have a 67-72 shortbed truck with a short tail shaft 350, and you put a 700r tranny in the drive line will not work anymore correct?

A long shaft th350 and a 700r4 are about the same length and use the same tail shaft.

For yours you can drop in the 700r4 and have your driveshaft shortened and rebalanced for a small amount of money.

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

Ok so it is true that my 350 swb driveline is to long. Now last question, if I have this right then a 350 swb drivelines are 58" and a 700r swb driveline is 55"-55.5"?

Re: What are the differences for shortbed drive shaft?

I'm not entirely sure myself. It's best to go to a driveline shop and ask them how they want you to measure the driveshaft and then measure from the tail shaft to your differential. Usually with the truck on its suspension so that your measureing and driving height
