It's a mystery! Who knows what's happened to this truck in the last 40 years!
Is it an EARLY 72? Car manufacturers often use up "old" parts or make running changes in a model year.

I would personally doubt this. You hear this mentioned quite often when something isn't quite right about a vehicle. Do you think GM would have used up old 71 parts and sold it as a new 72? I would guess it had a cab and door swap.

It is a nice looking truck either way and if the numbers all match up i wouldn't worry about it. Does it have a raised pad on the roof where the mirror mounts? Does the driver door still have the blue sticker on the frame?

This is very common actually. The parts are not used just last years model parts. Look in our catalogs and you will see 66 model year arm rests for early 67. Once the supply was exhausted, mminus parts for the parts department, the new style part would hit the assembly line. In the 70s GM made trucks called "Bonanza" (sp) package. They were whatever the assembly line had an abundance of to get rid off. You may have one style trim on the outside and another inside etc. All new parts but cleaning out the bin. Alot of times it was just oddball options.

Re: Did Chevy make a C-series 4x4?

All 2WD have a "C" designation, All 4WD have a "K" designation.
All 72 light duty trucks have molded plastic door panels.
All 72 light duty trucks have the screw in the door just below the wing window.
All 72 light duty trucks have their rear view mirrors glued to the windshield.

Any varience from that would be 71 or earlier.

Example: All 71 and earlier trucks have flat steel door panels. Some of witch could be vinal covered depending on the trim level package.

Any variation in the vin lets say a 4X4 with a "C" designation is either a truck with a cab swap or a frame that has been converted.
