ceramic coated exh manifolds and new engine break in
I heard you are not supposed to use ceramic coated manifolds while you break in a new engine. engine will be stock 327. im guessing it traps too much heat for the valves. I am going to break my engine in on a stand. Good idea or better in the truck? How long after the engine is broke In do I have to wait to put my ceramic coated manifolds on? anyone with experience with this? Rod.

During the initial break in while the engine parts are getting friendly with each other (rings, valve guides, cam, lifter, rockers, etc) the engine will run hot and the exhaust gas temps will be elevated, that's what burns off the ceramic coating. I would hold off for a hundred miles or so. Also I think that the header manufacturer and or the coater has a break in process for curing the ceramic coating.

so how long would I have to run it on a stand before I put them on? he problem that I have is this. My a/c brackets mount up to my manifold and intake manifold. what I thought I might do is break it in on the stand without any accessories on but the alternator. then after I was sure of no leaks and all procedures were completed change the manifolds to the ceramic and put on the accessories. the pictures below show how my a/c mounts up. it would be a real pain to have to break it in when the engine is in the truck and then add the a/c and stuff later. even the water pump would have to be unbolted on the passenger side.

In your case I would follow the break in procedure then put on the headers etal, and install. You might still get a little toasty but not as bad as break in.

Broke my 402 in with a set of Sandersons I had ceramic coated its baked on a 1200. When there is a large load on my diesel it may see 1200 degree egts. For my headers they still look as good as new.

Don't quote me on it but that was my experience. Pic is after break in. No spots or dulling.
