The paint is faded, spotted, and oxidized so I just wanted to get the dead paint off without buffing it. I used Dow glass cleaner/cut out lube that we use on all our glass work, just something to keep it wet and move any dirt off so it didn't scratch it while scrubbing. I would have done it outside with carwash but it was too cold for that. I don't think it matters what you use to keep it wet. You wouldn't want to try it on good paint, it'll leave hairline scratches on glossy paint. I think I'll leave it like it is, it has a nice sheen. If I buffed it then all the little flaws would show up way worse!
