88 truck any use as donor for disc swap?

Hello I am a new owner of a 64 and have been reading all the posts on the disc swap topic. From what I think I learned an 88 would NOT have any parts I can use? I promise I will post pics as soon as I get a new camera. Thank you for any assistance

The '88-'98 pickup front spindles, rotors and calipers can be used in a couple of ways, but it is a little more complicated than using the '71-'87 pickup front suspension.

One place you can read about it is in this thread, post #16.

Re: 88 truck any use as donor for disc swap?

WOW is my head spinning after all the threads on this topic !!!!!!!

Just confirming what I think I understand:

I have available a 1988 1500 5 lug donor....

In order to use the 88 suspension I would need lower control arms from a 3/4 ton 73-87 c-20, correct?

Then I would use the 88 upper arm, 88 spindle and the lower arm from the 3/4 C-20?

Which ball joint for lower?

Then all of the steering linkage will swap over? 88 to my 64?

This would give me 5 lugs on front and 6 on rear. Is there a 6 lug spindle available for the 88?

Power steering / brake booster master too?

Thanks to all responders I know this has topic has been commented on in depth but I have read so many I am only positive that I am unsure for sure!!

Thanks

you might have an 87. I believe they went back to 6 lug in 88 unless it was a Burb and or the other. Get some pics of the suspension, and the truck too.

Re: 88 truck any use as donor for disc swap?

You're close, but not quite.

You will need a '67-'87 C20 lower control arm. Use your original '64 upper control arm. Use the '88 spindle, rotor and caliper, etc. You will use the ball joints for the '88 spindle. The steering linkage will be a mix of both the '88 and the '64, along with the tierods specified in the thread I linked to. If you want 6 lug front discs, then you will use the light duty C2500 rotors also mentioned in the thread (this is the original idea behind using these parts) You can not use the '88 steering box, but you can use the booster and master cylinder. In fact the '88-'98 boosters are one of the boosters compatable with my booster brackets.

Have you seen anyone who has successfully completed this swap ? I've read about it a lot of times, but all I've seen is reports of ending up with camber issues that can't be adjusted out enough. Id like to read about a successful completed project.

Re: 88 truck any use as donor for disc swap?

Thank you to everyone for the responses.

I had originally planned on a 73-87 swap but in my search came across the 88 c1500.
It has a 4.3 and a 700r4 both remanned by Jasper. This led to the question as to what else could be used on the 64.
After lots of reading it seems that by the time I chase down the c20 lower arms and c2500 rotors I would be better off staying with the 73-87 plan.

Now I have the 6 lug rear to deal with: Is the simplest way to have the 6 lug axles plugged and redrilled? I read there is an issue with the 64 having 17 spline axles so the aftermarket axle swap gets expensive?

I may still purchase the 88 for the drivetrain and booster/master as well as the stock wheels.

I originally planned to keep the 230 IL6 and put a 700r4 behind it, but now maybe go with the 4.3/700 combo.

Thank you all again,
looking forward to the responses.

Re: 88 truck any use as donor for disc swap?

You can get 6 lug rotors for about $75 each. Most guys like to go with 5 lug for more wheel options.

Re: 88 truck any use as donor for disc swap?

Unfortunately I have not. I do have most of the parts for this conversion, but no idea when I will get to it. I have only heard of 2 guys with a camber issue, but no follow up. In the original thread there were 2 members that claimed to have done this with no issues.

http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...ad.php?t=35042

I am going to see if I can contact those 2 guys and get their input.

Ron I think its a matter of economics, not sure of your area but here in Nor cal it s hard to find 73 to 87 parts without paying thru the nose, this would just open up the door for a lot of newer/cheaper parts.

Re: 88 truck any use as donor for disc swap?

I like it for the ability to have 6 lug front disc brakes using all factory parts. Plus if you are resourceful it can be done fairly inexpensively.

The other advantage would be for the guys that have a C20 or 30 and don't want to run 8 lug wheels. There are less parts to change to get to 5 or 6 lug.
