Chassis / Frame vin decoder ?

Is there any place where we can decode these ?

I know how to decode the vin plate in the cab and the glove box, but i cannot find anything on the chassis

My chassis is 42z1073?8

I can assume 2 is probably the year 1972 , Z is the Fremont plant, and the last 6 digits is the serial number. But what is the 4 ?

Re: Chassis / Frame vin decoder ?

I believe the 4 would designate the frame belonging to either a truck or van.

You are correct on the other numbers.

...and a copy of the VIN card for '72 (trucks are on page 2). We used to carry laminated versions of these in our shirt pocket while building the trucks.
