Re: UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE! I'm an IDIOT!
We can all laugh now, that's a good one. I knew a guy that did that 30 years ago on a 307 I think. It came out the tailpipe in threads. I have never heard of this again until now.

Re: UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE! I'm an IDIOT!
You should hang that on the wall as a reminder.
One time my father n law got mad for something and threw a cast iron skillet in the field. Well guess what happened come harvest time. Yep, the combine ate it and spit it out the back all mangled up. My mother n law painted it up and wrote "Lesson learned" on it. It now hangs on the wall by the dining room table so everyone can see it.

Re: UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE! I'm an IDIOT!
I very much appreciate posts like that--it's good to know I'm not the only one. I was once so mad that I had run over my wheel barrow while backing up, that I roasted the tires and hit the fence. Got out to survey the damage, and slammed the door breaking the window glass. Luckily my wife was stankding nearbye and witnessed the whole thing.

And months later still no ill effects from the rag being chewed up and spit out! I've heard Marvel Mystery Oil will clean out cylinders much better than a rag, lol!

Re: UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE! I'm an IDIOT!
One time I was helping a friend adjust valves on his truck just before dark. I had to check my mc fluid level on my 70 Monte and with the hood up, I stuffed a few shop rags on the bottom of the firewall on top of frame to catch any spilled fluid.
Well, after topping the mc off, I went to help my buddy with his valves. About an hour later it got dark and I had to get home-I shut the hood and proceeded to go home. Maybe 15 minutes into the drive home, my brakes were fading in and out pretty bad-then they failed completely so I swerved around an intersection and was coasting down a business side street when in a big window reflection that I had a huge fireball raging under my car! I got out and found a burning pile of rags on top of the frame below the master cylinder next to my brake prop valve. My headers caught the brake fluid drenched rags on fire! Lucky I caught it before it got any worse. |

Re: UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE! I'm an IDIOT!
Never underestimate the power of a shop rag. The same thing happened to a friend of mine about 20 years ago with a 454. He pulled the carb and used shop rags to cover the intake and forget he pulled the carb, attempted to start it and then realized he pulled the carb. While all of this was taking place the shop rag got sucked into the number 8 cylinder and actually cracked his block because the rag would only compress so far and something had to give.
Play the lotto my friend, you are one lucky man

Re: UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE! I'm an IDIOT!
You're lucky that's all it was. On my old '69 when replacing the intake, a piece of chisel broke off and I didn't see it, punched a hole right through my #1 cylinder.

A smaller engine would have had a lot more issues. Lucky for sure.
