Thermostat housing groove for thermostat?

So my truck didn't have a thermostat in it.
Should there be a recessed groove for the thermostat on the part on the left, like the one on the right has?
I can see there is a little ring around there. I almost looks like some old gasket got pressed in there. Wondering if that's normal, or if I should dig it out.

Dig it out. Looks to me like the old, complete gasket is still on there. Ran into the same thing on my '52...no thermostat. Start scraping!

No groove in the top only in the bottom.

Got it. No grove on the top side. There is a bunch of old gasket material stuck on there.
Had to sharpen my gasket scraper, but I got it off.
