2000 silverado trailer wiring harness ???
hi Im trying to figure whats uo with the new to me 2000 silverado, I love the truck, and now trying to get some work done--hauling a stripped car to the scales to pay for title transfer. I fould the fuse box under the hood-- No way to rigg a trailer light harness to it-- ansd apparantly no hot take off points under the dash-- except maybe the cigarette lighter.
The rear of the truck has a dummy plug in the rear bumper-- but no wires going to it, i looked around and found a whacked off harness with the Wire ends all sealed over with plastic??? Is this one of the GM scamms to force an owner to take the truck in to have a tech install a plug recepticle - since they know which wires go where, or am I missing something? since its a 4.3 it's very possible it was never used to pull a trailer before. Any insight would be appreciated Thanks--Truckeez. |

You should be able to go to the parts store and get a trailer harness that just plugs in line with the existing harness. Pico brand i believe is one that makes them.

I have an 05 with a 4.3. I went to Advance Auto and bought the harness for my truck (off the shelf in the customer area), plugged it in when I got outside, and drove away. The plug was around the spare tire. It had a cap on it.

Re: 2000 silverado trailer wiring harness ???
You have to completely make sure that the factory harness was cut, and not the accessory part. GM DID NOT make it so wires had to be spliced. It was meant to be plug and play, it's cheaper to make one harness the same with an extra plug than to make two seperate harnesses. Trace the wires back as far as you can, if they go into a taped up/plastic harness then it was cut, or maybe you'll find the plug. Unplug cut up harness and plug in new.
An example, my truck did not have fog lights when new. I added the GM accesory kit and it just plugged into the existing harness. Anyway, if you trace the wires back and can't find a plug, then someone stupidly cut it off and you'll have to splice the new plug in.

Now would be a good time for someone to insert a pic of the truck rear wiring schematic.

Re: 2000 silverado trailer wiring harness ???
I understand what the problem is I just figured this would be the easiest route. Seeing as to how you want to go this path heres the way. Contrary to what 67chevyredneck has stated, If your truck came with the light duty trailer harness, They were blunt cut and are fully intended to be spliced into. You stated there are 4 wires in that blunt cut harness correct? They should be brown, yellow, dk. green, and white. The white being the ground, brown tail, yellow for left turn, green for right turn. If you are using the seven pin flat pin round connector, you can just run those four into it, leaving the other 3 unused. the other 3 would be for 12 volt supply, trailer brakes, and aux/back up lamps. If you are wanting those 3 to work as well, then you will need to run a seperate brake controller and run a lead back to your plug, and run seperate leads from the fuse block for the 12 volt supply, and a lead for your aux/ buckup lamps, from whatever location, if you chose to use them. The blunt cut harness was more intended for people using smaller trailers with just a flat 4 pin connector. As you had guessed in your first post, most people were not using these light duty trucks with larger trailers that require the larger plug. And fyi if you use the 7 pin there are colors printed next to each pin on the back side of the plug. Don't mach wires to whats printed on the plug. they are not right. Best thing would be to google a pic of the trailer plug pins (truck side) and go off that.
