NP 208 Transfer case
I have a 1986 NP 208 Transfer case with a 700r Transmission I need to see what transfer case shifter looks like so if you have a picture that would be great. Thanks

I have (not on purpose) an 85 NP208 and SM465 in my 72.

I have just put a 700R4 & 208 in my '72. Can get you a few pics tomorrow of mine. The shifter does not look that great. There may be a way to ditch the oversized plastic cover and just use the actual shifter mount with a custom knob and boot that would look closer to what was factory. I'm not far enough along with my resto yet for that.

Yep, that big nasty plastic thing looks out of place on a 67-72. The 208 shift pattern seems to place 2H all the way forward to place the shifter in a more unobtrusive spot forward almost parallel to the hump.
The 205 shifter was (if the pic in my mind is accurate) pretty much vertical. Got any pics of what you're working on? We like pics... |

Whats the reasoning for going with the 208 rather than adapting the 205? I plan on going 700 or 4l60 or 80 in the future and want to keep my 205. I have a local tranny guy who will put the new shaft in for cost of the part if he does a rebuild.

I have the 700R4 & 208 Transfer case from an 86 giving to me , I dont have a 205. So that is my reason.All I need is the NP 208 shifter.

I understand the free part but why go with the 208 if you can get a 205 and not have to deal with adapting the 208. Is there a benefit over the 205? I see 205s pop up on craigslist often. I was just wondering if there was more to using the 208 rather than picking up a 205 for a couple hundred and it looking more like original. Wasn't meant as a smart a question I'm just curious.

Also is it bolt in besides the shifter? Does the adapter bolt to the crossmember?

I have the 700r4 & np208 installed in my blazer everything works fine I just need a shifter for the 4x4 to work.
