LS swaps and gauges
With so many of you doing the full LS engine and tranny swaps what are you doing for gauges and speedo? I know a few of you have used GPS but what about the stock gauges, lights, speedo ect?
What do you have to use to make the stock ones work?

To use the stock temp and oil guages you need only to plumb in the original sending units. The temp guage reads a little higher because the LS thermostats are usually 195 and the motors seem torun pretty close to 200-210 if I recall correctly but the speedometer is a different story. The speed sensors serve a few purposes so they need to be plugged into the ecu no matter what you do. We mainly use digital instruments in our LS builds so I'm not sure what's available for using your existing speedometer.

I believe there is an adapter of some sort to turn the VSS pulse into a spinning motion for the speedometer cable...can't remember where it was at but I think it was fairly expensive.

There is a thread in the LS swap area about converting your OE speedo to electronic using an S-10 speedometer

Hi Boog, I will be selling my shiftworks brand conversion from my 4l65e trans. This allows the stock speedo cable to be used and puts a vss signal out to the pcm. This is all handled in a converted extension housing. I'm converting to electronic speedo. Also I used the stock engine temp sender threaded into the face of the truck Ls water pump. I installed a 4 ohm resistor 1/2 watt inline to the sender so the 200 degree ls motor would show 1/2 gauge in the stock gauge cluster. Good luck Brian F.

I knew of the cable x converter. I wondered if there was now something else you guys were using. I have not heard of the shiftworks converter.
I know some of you go with aftermarket digital instruments but I like the OE gauges in my trucks. I'm not about to dive into an LS swap just now, only fact finding.

I bought a set of Classic Instruments gauges, I like the fact that they look pretty close to stock with just a little bit of a modern touch to them. I haven't received them yet, and I'm just barely starting my LS swap (haven't found the motor/trans yet but still collecting parts) but I'll post up about them once we get to that point.
