Side of frame mounted gas tank???

I have been looking for a recent thread that showed what I seem to remember was a later model suburban gas tank mounted on the driver side between the frame and drive line. I posted asking what the tank was from, but cannot find the thread?? I searched looking for my posts and it doesn't show up, searched for gas tank threads and cannot find it either. A nudge in the right direction would be helpful! Thanks in advance.

Well here is what I have saved for the same idea I just do not remember where I got the info. I did have some PM's with the owner of the thread. Maybe this will help.

I am doing exactly what you discribed to my '56 3100. I got a Suburban tank which has all the right dents to nest it right up to the frame cross members. I modified the original gas tank starps to work with the frame tank. The filler neck to the tank is right on top of the frame on the right side of the truck.

I then got a universal gas filler door from Tanks Inc and installed it in the rear fender behind the right rear tire. The filler neck is at a 45 degree angle and is 2" pipe size, so I had a 2" x 1-1/2" reducer made and installed that right at the Tanks Filler neck (only used about 4" of 2" rubber hose). I got (2) 1-1/2" 90* Gas Filler rubber hoses from NAPA and used a straight piece of 1-1/4" EMT pipe (1-1/2" OD pipe) to go between the two 90's. The pipe is U bolted to the bottom of the bed cross members to the outside of the leaf springs.

I'm not on the road yet, but I like the way it looks.

Oh, I forgot to mention I got a roll over vent and will be mounting it on an ell bracket and hanging it from one of the top fender bolts under the fender.

I'm still working on the gas tank filler neck set-up. It will most likely be put on the passenger side above the running board. As you can see in the pictures the tank neck will be below the bed floor, but the actual filler neck will need to be angled up so when I'm filling the tank gas doesn't burp out when the nozzle clicks off. The sending unit used for the cab tank can be modified to work in the frame tank.

I also took some pictures of my install. To get the pipe running along the frame closer to level I bought a new cross member that has the offset on the ends. I also sent my tank out to a chemical print rust stripping business...it came back looking great. The only Item you will need to make are the wedges that keep the tank from shifting. This is done by welding a 3" piece of 3/4 x 3/4 angle iron to a piece of flat stock that gets bolted to the bottom of the cross members so the edge of the tank and the pinch weld seam are nested into the wedge made by the angle iron. Hope this makes sense. You also need to get a piece of 1/4" rubber about 6" wide and 18" long to go between the cross member as an anti squeak pad. I also put a thin rubber strip between the straps and tank.































Pics may not be in order but at least it will give you an idea.

From any taskforce burb 1955.2 to 1959 will match the frame rails of task force trucks as I remember

That is slick. I still have my stock 48 tank that isn't in great shape but putting the tank up on the inside of the frame rail has a lot of plusses especially when I am running a six where the duals can be run down the left side.

The one picture shows your right side exhaust sitting on the floor. Will it fit on the right side with the gas tank installed or did you have to move it???

The tank that I saw was white plastic with two "caps" on top, one for the fuel pump and hose the other was a blank cap. It was recessed to fit around a cross member and was mounted on the drivers side. Do not remember seeing where the filler was.

I've been thinking about using a more modern side tank. There is a yard with a good selection of trucks that is local- my schedule has been pretty tough lately, but will let you know what I find when I get there!

I looked at using the tanks from my donor 74 trucks but they were for long beds and would not fit. When the weather gets reasonable I am going to hit the wrecking yards here too, but would be interested in what you find.

When you say 74, do you mean 1974?

Yes, in 1985 I bought a 1974 K10 drivetrain except for the engine from a guy that was upgrading to K20 drivetrain. This time I got another with a 4 bolt 355 for the engine, tranny, front axle, transfer case and other misc. parts. I sold the rest to recoupOoo my money.
