Hey guys,

My engine is a straight six, 250 with high mileage. No leaks and does not burn any oil that I can detect. What kind of oil should I use for my first oil change as the new owner? Straight 30w? Thanks!

I like Rotella T from Shell. It is tough to find striaght 30 though. 20-50w would be good if you aren't in a super cold environ ment.

ive used rotella t with great success in my 292's. right now im using mobil super 5000 10w 30. im really considering going back to rotella t cause at operating temp i get about 25-30 psi idle and rotella was always in the 35-40's. i dont really drive her much during the winter time if i can help it.

I use Valvoline VR1 Racing oil SAE30 Motor oil. That's what my machinest told me to use in my 350's. Check it out it has the additives these old engines need.

thats it , if you have a flat tappet cam , this is what you want to run , joe gibbs makes some good stuff too , but im sure you will pay more for it

I've used Mobil One synthetic for years on all my vehicles. My 72 has a flat tappet cam so I use a zddp additive.

There are some "high mileage" formulations at AZ, Walmart and Advanced(MaxLife, GTX etc.)

I use straight 30 weight in my 292. Sometimes I run 20W-50 weight -like in the winter - not that we've seen much of that in Tucson, this year.
In the 350 in my '71 GMC Jimmy, I use Valvoline SynPower 20W-50 year round.
If I have new old style oil, Service SL, I don't use additive, but if I'm using Service SM, I add a 16 Oz bottle of STP for the ZDDP.
If I could afford it I'd use Valvoline Racing 30.
