406 yes or no?

My 1968 c10 is in the body shop as I text this. My friend owns a very reputable garage here in Orlando. He has a built 406 ready to go if I choose. Forged crank, professionally ported camel hump heads with the big valves, roller rockers, flat tappet hydraulic cam KB forged pistons, Victor Jr intake, ceramic coated headers, MSD ignition 6al. he told me the cam is not very wild and I am not sure about the casting numbers on the heads but my question is is this a solid set up? $6000 installed. included brand new water pump, fuel pump, stall converter, aluminum radiator, double fan with shroud. Plus a holly 750 double pumpe rebuilt.

I know there is some debate about the camel hump heads but I'm really not looking to race it, what do you think the numbers will be as far as horse power and torque? Any input would be great thank you.

Several years ago I had 408 with camel humps 2.05 intake, 1.62 exhaust, lightened crank ultra light pistons, victor jr, .635 solid roller, studs everywhere "x" rods with 4000 stall in manual valve bodied tci 350, 4.56 auburn geared 12 bolt custom headers 1-7/8 primary's 3.5 collectors, 3" exhaust in single chamber flowmasters. Lot of suspension stuff, would lift left front when hooked. Was a real runner, you can't go wrong with them.

I have had a few friends with similar setups One in a Nova ran low 6's in the 1/8 mile and could have been in a street car. Of course the cam is gonna be the main factor in this combo,as is the case in any instance. Maybe 400hp 435 lbs of TQ? Jim

Are you racing? The 750 DP and the Victor JR are gonna suck on the street... bog city. It'll need at the minimum a 3,500 RPM stall. If the cam is mild... then it doesn't match the intake and carb... again, bog city.

Now then... if you let it breath and eat... it'll scream in the upper RPM's. But if you intend to just be-bop around town and use as a DD... you might wanna rethink that setup.

The 406's are a great engine. Whether built mild or wild... you just gotta pick which way to go. Stick a dual plane Edelbrock Performer RPM (either the airgap or non-airgap will do), and a Holley vac sec carb like a 3310, and you will have a real street pounder.

That's a lotta motor for someone who's not gonna race it!
You'll be tuning on that combo all summer.

I'd say pass on the motor. You can buy a create small block with a warranty for half that.

I really appreciate the advice. He told me he will tune it to my liking so there's not a problem there. I don't race it b I've always had high horsepower cars but newer.I know this is a totally diff animal, and actually he's giving m e one year warranty with it which i think is not bad. So intake and cam and we go from there. Ty

I would want to know the compression. I have 64cc heads and run 23cc dish pistons to get pump friendly. The standard 5cc flat tops are not going to take pump gas at all with 64cc heads. Forget that victor intake. perormer RPM with a spacer is all you need. Also make sure the heads have steam holes added or its a no go. Most avoid the 70-72 4 bolt main blocks. These are the weakest. Lastley no more than 40 over on the pistons.

**edit** You are not going to get a crate motor with all those bonuses for that price! Go look at summit of jegs. Avoid blueprints.

Compression is 10.5 to 1. Steam holes are already done. It is pump friendly so maybe I'm mistaken on the pistons. What do you guesstimate on thr tq?
