Thanks much. But as usual I got questions. What is the grey piece?
That black piece is mounted to the truck.

Am I missing something?

Tx Firefighter thanks a bunch. Looks like all I am missing is a nut and washer to attach the piece to the tranny. BTW what does the field goal have a bolt that locks it down or a clip?

Thanks

Here's how I do it. It's not exactly what the manual calls for, but it works very well.

I always piece this junk together from wherever, so I have to make do. The spring is just a garage bolt can special. I worked on LLV trucks for the post office (little square right-hand drive buggers that deliver your mail) and this is how they were setup. Except right hand side of tranny rather than left like normal.

So it looks like I need a spring and a clip. What kind of spring is that? Can I get it from any old parts or hardware store? How about the clip, is there a specific name for it?

Thanks again

I dunno about the spring. I have coffee cans full of springs that I root through.

The clip is commonly referred to as a Jesus clip. You could use a cotter pin just as easy though (or a piece of wire, or a bread tie, or one of your wife's hair pins......).

Mine on the '72 is setup like in Tx Firefighter's pic with the big spring, and I have had no trouble with it. The one in the pic I posted is the actual way GM did it for '72. Although I like the way mine is better.

It is out of a GM parts manual. Unfortunitely I no longer have this manual only this one page that I had copied off along time ago, I lost the book due to a house fire back in '95, and I had this page in my glovebox in my truck so I could find the parts I needed to fix it. But the Factory Service manuals are a great help also, that's what I have for my '72.

Update Time:

I took the linkage to a company that does media blasting and 25$ later the pieces look great. I gave them a couple layers of paint and 30 mins laters we have a original factory linkage installed. BTW the spring that I needed I found taped to the truck next to the frame bar. Tranny is shifting fine. Next stop installing the kickdown switch.
