I think the rotor should point towards the #1 cylinder when you put the dist in.

I don't know for sure, but you can hand crank the engine until the timing mark lines up with the TDC mark on the timing cover. Your rotor should be at number one.

Turn the motor over to the TDC pointer, this willbe either #1 or #6 firing, you can assume that it is one if the rotor is pointing in the general direction of cyl 1 but it can be stab in any position.
Wire the terminal that the rotor is pointing at as one if it runs like crap or doesnt run it is 180 deg out use #6 as #1 and wire it from there

it is all dependent on how the dist was stabbed.

Rooster's 67 is correct...number one can be any terminal depending on how the distribitor was installed. Just remove the number one sparkplug and get someone to bump the starter while you hold your finger over the sparkplug hole...the compression will push your finger out when number one comes up...where every the rotor is pointing when this happens is number one

Yep cuz mine is the first one past the terminal block going clockwise. Just get your rotor in the right place and go from there.

Well, there IS a correct position for number 1. I just remember going by the book when installing my dist. Put the number one cylinder at TDC then turn the oil pump shaft until it lines up with the exaust valve on number 5. Or was it the intake on 5? BAH!

there is no correct position, you can set it up any way you like. It will work any any position as long as your at TDC on #1 and the rotor is pointing toward the #1 wire on the cap.

But all the manuels say the factory set #1 on the distributor at 5 o'clock or pointing toward the #1 cly. If you want to follow factory placement.

First off, number 1 is where you make it.

But, from the factory, it was the second pole clockwise of the connector deal. How can I prove this you may ask?

Let me post a picture of something that most mechanics have never seen. It's a factory wire retainer for an HEI. It is usually thrown away when the original plug wires are changed.

Note the neat little terminal numbers on it
