Configuration values
So I knew I loved the 67-72 trucks and recently picked up this:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=611042 Didn't give a whole lot of thought to anything other than a 4x4 was an absolute must, I guess I had a slight preference for a long bed so I could use it to get stuff done and would have preferred a 3/4 ton if I could have found one. Just kind of futzing around looking at various threads on the $ side and it seems like shortbeds are worth more, and people are even converting 4x4 to 2 wheel drive? I don't think any of that matters for my purposes, but it was counterintuitive for me. Do the 3/4 tons go for about the same as a 1/2 ton long bed in equivalent condition? Also I read the 71/72 were worth a little more than earlier years - again, counterintuitive to me. Is that just because of the disc brakes? FWIW, none of this really influences where I'm headed with my truck - I'd probably trade it for an equivalent 3/4 ton in equal condition, but other than that I got what I need. Still I am curious, coming from the muscle car scene so to speak some of these things aren't immediately obvious to me. |

imo the shortbeds are worth more because they are popular now. most people arent buying them to do work. 2wd is worth more because its harder to lower a 4x4. lowered swb is where its at these days.
1/2 ton is more popular because of the wheels. Theres many more options on 5bolt vs 8 bolt. i have no idea on the 71/72 thing. probably disc brakes, newer engine and trans? |

I like a lowered long bed better........but that's my two cents, I never went by what something is worth but by what I like more.

The '71-'72 4x4s are more desirable because they have the front open knuckle axles with disc brakes and many have the NP205 transfer case.

I have appreciated these trucks for awhile but just started really learning the ins and outs. For now, I think my top pick would be a base 67 or 68 k20, blue with white roof and bumpers.
For some weird reason, I really love base model trucks. Heck even late models, really. |

Different strokes for different folks.
Everyone has their preferences. What matters is what makes you happy. As for years being more popular than the other... In these body styles, it doesn't matter as long as it is a 67 through 72.

Good to know. I will just enjoy my truck and if the right 3/4 ton 4x4 comes along I will see about going that direction.
How about the earlier trucks? The NAPCO trucks seem to get big $ but not the 60-66 years for some reason. I'd be just as happy in an earlier one but I worry about being able to get parts if I am out on the road. |

Yeah, NAPCOs definately can cost some $s for an original in good condition. I've been looking for an affordable one for a few years, but no luck.
There don't seem to be that many 60-66 k models out there, and the ones that are may be too hacked or in too bad shape, so the prices are low, although I've seen some in good shape or restored selling for a lot on Ebay. |

napcos are rare, but not exactly fun to cruise down the highway in. I'd argue that 60-66 swb big windows are every bit as expensive nowadays as the 67-72 swb trucks. Less of them lying around it seems anyway. Anyhoo.. As for looking for a k20, depends what you want to do with it. If you need to plow, haul, etc, then maybe a 3/4 will be worth the upgrade. For just 4x4ing around, K10 is a very nice truck. I was a swb fleetside sorta person for a long time - both 60-66 and 67-72. Still like em, but my taste has evolved a bit to be a 3/4 fan. I like the higher trim levels (and that is probably as much a driver in the value as the body style - i.e. a Cheyenne Super 3/4 lwb will probably bring more than just a Custom10 swb. But... all things being equal (trim levels included) - short fleets bring the $). Anyhoo... all I'm saying is that tastes are all different, and even our own individual tastes can change, so I've stopped trying to predict. I'm pretty comfy with my ol 72 C20, but I keep my eyes peeled for that holy grail K20 Cheyenne Super Custom Camper....
