Jack repair?
My smaller floor jack quit working. When I try to raise it up, nothing happens not even any resistance. Can a jack be repaired, or is it just scrap metal?

most of the time the seal in the piston goes which is usually rubber and nylon washers... the kit and parts involved usually cost more than the couple of dollars added to the investment for a whole new jack

theres a coupla floor jacks here in jacksonville that are on the craig if you want to check them out.on is fairly new according to the ad. can't hurt to look.

This one is prolly at least 20 years old, its a good one I really hate to lose it. I have another one, actually a bigger, heavier one, but the smaller one just works. Thanks Kurt, I also have my son, Justins smaller jack here. 463...seriously? Or is it like "your car may be low on blinker fluid".
How would you even check that? thanks guys!

Yep, the kind of jacks that you pump the handle up and down -- those are hydraulic -- and they take oil. There's usually a threaded plug of some sort to open up. But ALL of my jacks failed because they wore out. Eventually I added 3 lifts to my garage. Problem solved. Now I rarely use jacks and haven't needed to replace one in quite a while.

On a roller the jack there should be a plug on the jack near the fluid release screw for fluid addition.
On a bottle jack there is a rubber plug on the side about 1/2 up the side.

Must be the season, my old jack just died too, 20 plus years old and just gave up. Harbor freight just opened a new store here in town and had an aluminum 2 1/2 ton on sale , always wanted one , nice and light looks cool too

If you have a industrial rubber supply place near you. You can probably take the jack apart, take the seal/ o rings there and match them up. And fix it for a small fraction of the cost of an actual rebuild kit. We have several big factories in the area so those places here aren't that hard to find.
I also agree with checking the oil in the jack. My motor hoist has a leak in the cylinder, when I use it to pull a motor, I just keep adding oil to it until I get it high to remove the motor. LOL.

I agree with those telling you to check the fluid. I had one that quit working, adding fluid, and we were back in business.

I will check check the fluid and see if I can get it going again. If its not the fluid, then it may be a learning project for Thomas. lol, he is always itching to use mommy's tools. Cant wait til summer, we have already got our projects lined up!!
 Thanks for all the info yall, repairing a jack is just nothing you really think about I guess unless yours breaks, lol.

Now you can use ATF in your jack and it won't hurt a thing. If a refill doesn't work most likely you've blown a U-cup. Its an easy fix, pretty messy but if you own one of these old trucks you use to that!
