Power steering Conv.
Working on a 67 c10 with a 283. Bought a Power steering conversion kit from Ecklers http://www.ecklerstrucks.com/chevy-t...1967-1987.html. Brackets they furnished us do NOT fit the application. They cause interference with the altinator belt and bracket. There has been mention of using a big block pulley online. Anybody run in to this? or have any suggestions?
Thanks, Greg |

Re: Power steering Conv.
Welcome to the forum!
Can you post a picture of what you are working on? That kit looks like it is missing the correct brackets for a small block. Your engine from the factory would have been equipped with a short water pump, and that means a lot when shopping for parts like this. Since brackets for short and long water pump engines are different.

Small block routes like this. Note that the alternator is at the top and runs off the flywheel-water pump belt while the Power steering pump has a separate belt off the front groove on the crank pulley. the ecklers bracket fits if this is the type drive you are using.: |

Re: Power steering Conv.
Looks like the set up, but the bracket (12) hits the alternator and the belt. Second problem is that the pulley comes out too far.

Re: Power steering Conv.
I also got this pulley http://www.ecklerstrucks.com/chevy-t...1947-1972.html from Ecklers which is the second problem? Maybe the shaft is too long?

Re: Power steering Conv.
Thanks Fitz, I found this bracket http://www.classicindustries.com/196...s/c411141.html that looks like it would give me the space needed around alternator, but doesnt solve the pulley problem. Do they make a reverse offset pulley for something like this? Thanks in advance. Hope to someday give back to the forum.

Re: Power steering Conv.
the pics were very helpful. Looks like I need a 3 belt crank shaft pulley. The 3rd track on the pic you sent me looks like it should work. Gonna try that along with the bracket that gives me clearence for alternator belt. I'd put pics in here but I guess I need to get my IT guy to help, lol.

You could try placing the PS pump where your alternator is now and drop the alternator to the lower position as shown in the 71 routing diagram. From your pictures it looks like the block is drilled and tapped to go either way with the PS pump but you are right, you will need the 3 step crank pulley if you put the pump on the bottom. All of the drawings I posted are from the factory assembly manual which is available from most of the aftermarket vendors. Good luck! |

Re: Power steering Conv.
my k1500 1971 has the power steering pump at the bottom of the engine, and the alternator by the exhaust above it. the alternator is supported off a bracket which is bolted to the front of the cylinder head and not the exhaust manifold. The belt is about 3/8 of an inch away from the power steering pump. its close but does not cause any problems. i have just shimmed out the bracket for the ps as it was not inline with my alternator pulley, and crankshaft pulley.
if you want a photo let me know as i have just put the engine in and i have not got the body fenders on , so a clear shot. |

Re: Power steering Conv.
The illistration above is for a six cylinder engine. To the best of my knowledge, there is no v8 application where the alternator was mounted below the ps pump.
Your problem is the ps kit is designed for use with 68-72 alternator brackets. I have never had a 67, but the alternator brackets on your truck are different from what I have seen on 68-72 trucks. 67 trucks originally used a different type of ps system which was a slave system which bolted to the existing steering system. You will also have an issue when bolting the later 68-72 style ps box to the frame of your truck. You will need to dent the frame in some in order to get it to mount up. |

Re: Power steering Conv.
Yep, we got the box on with some heat and a hammer. the bracket they sent us with the kit is the issue.

Re: Power steering Conv.
Adricar1, yes if you could send a pic may help. I picked up a three step crank pulley from a pick a part off of a 71 c20 that looks like it may solve the pump problem. I'll let you guys know how it all works out. Hopefully may help someone down the road. Thanks again
